What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Mechanical Engineering Research, and why are they important?

To thrive in Mechanical Engineering Research, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and often a graduate degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like ANSYS or MATLAB, and experience with laboratory equipment are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear technical communication set outstanding researchers apart. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative research and effective collaboration, which are vital for advancing technology and solving complex engineering challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in mechanical engineering research roles?

Mechanical engineering research professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing theoretical analysis with experimental validation, managing tight project timelines, and staying current with rapidly evolving technologies. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is frequent, so strong communication skills are crucial for integrating input from different fields. Additionally, securing funding for research and publishing results in reputable journals can be competitive, requiring persistence and adaptability.

What is mechanical engineering research?

Mechanical engineering research involves the systematic investigation and development of new technologies, materials, processes, or methods within the field of mechanical engineering. Researchers in this area work to solve complex engineering problems, improve existing mechanical systems, and innovate in areas like robotics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science. The goal is to advance knowledge and contribute to technological progress in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineering Research vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineering ResearchMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; often requires research experienceBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; focus on design skills
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilities, academic or corporate R&D centersDesign studios, manufacturing plants, engineering firms
Primary FocusDeveloping new theories, materials, or technologiesCreating and testing mechanical components and systems
Industry UsageResearch institutions, universities, R&D departmentsProduct development, manufacturing, engineering consulting

Mechanical Engineering Research involves exploring new concepts and technologies in labs, often within academic or corporate R&D settings. In contrast, Mechanical Design Engineers focus on designing, prototyping, and refining mechanical systems for practical application. Both roles require a strong foundation in mechanical engineering but differ in their primary objectives and work environments.

Job description

SENIOR MANAGER, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ABOUT LVT

LVT is redefining how businesses operate in the physical world, moving beyond traditional security solutions to deliver AI-driven, actionable intelligence that makes sites smarter, safer, and more secure. Since pioneering our first mobile, solar-powered units, our commitment to scrappy, hands-on innovation has made us an established leader and one of the fastest-growing companies in intelligent site technology. We are building the next generation of solutions-from our physical units in the field to a powerful Agentic AI platform-that allows our customers to gain unprecedented visibility and control over safety, compliance, and operations. This is your chance to join a cutting-edge team that isn't just watching the world change, but actively building the technology that is changing it.

We're a team that's focused on growth and innovation, and we're proud that our crew, products, and leadership are being recognized for it.

  • A Top-Tier Growth Company: Named one of the Financial Times' Fastest Growing Companies 2025 and #10 on the Inc. 5000 Rocky Mountain Regional list for 2025.
  • Innovative Leadership: Our CEO, Ryan Porter, was named an EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2025, and our CTO, Steve Lindsey, was inducted into the Silicon Slopes CTO Hall of Fame in 2024.
  • Product & Software Excellence: We were named one of The Software Report's Top 100 Software Companies of 2023 and are a winner of the Security Today Govies Award for 2025.
ABOUT THIS ROLE

As the Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will lead the hardware evolution of LVT's products into new form factors and market segments. You are responsible for the entire mechanical lifecycle: from helping determine product direction, performing rapid R&D, delivering through development stage gates and supporting sustaining efforts. You will lead a high-performing team of engineers to solve complex thermal, structural, and power challenges in extreme environments. This role is a critical bridge between visionary product design and operational excellence, ensuring our "scrappy" innovation scales into world-class reliability.

This role is based in-office out of our Headquarters in American Fork, Utah, although some days will need to be spent with the team and inhouse manufacturing based in Spanish Fork. There will also be approximately 5-10% travel required to our partners overseas facilities.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Strategic Leadership: Own the mechanical engineering roadmap, balancing the speed of New Product Introduction (NPI) with the stability of sustaining engineering.
  • Team Mentorship: Lead, hire, and develop a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team, fostering a culture of high accountability and rapid prototyping.
  • Design for Excellence (DfX): Oversee the design of camera and sensor products, ensuring they meet strict standards for manufacturability, reliability, cost, and field serviceability.
  • Lifecycle Management: Direct the transition of products from prototype to mass production, working closely with Product, Program Management, Supply chain and manufacturing partners.
  • Thermal & Structural Integrity: Validate hardware performance through rigorous simulation and physical testing to survive diverse, off-grid environmental conditions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Analyze field failure data to drive iterative design improvements, increasing the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) for our global fleet.
  • Vendor Management: Manage relationships with fabricators and component suppliers to ensure technical specifications and lead times align with LVT's growth targets.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Proven Leadership: 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in a formal people-management or lead role.
  • Full-Lifecycle Expertise: Demonstrated success taking complex hardware products from a "napkin sketch" through high-volume production.
  • Technical Depth: Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD (Creo preferred) and a strong grasp of FEA, thermal analysis, and electronics.
  • Ruggedized Design Experience: Background in designing electric-mechanical products with connectivity, audio, thermal, optical,  and power challenges.
  • NPI Expert: Deep understanding of manufacturing processes (sheet metal, injection molding, CNC, etc.) and global supply chain dynamics.
  • Analytical Mindset: You make decisions based on data, whether it's stress-test results or manufacturing cost-of-goods-sold (COGS) analysis.
  • Communication Style: Ability to translate complex engineering hurdles into clear business risks and opportunities for executive leadership.
  • Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
BENEFITS

We believe you do your best work when your whole life is supported. We invest in our crew's health, families, and financial futures with a benefits package designed to support you inside and outside the office.
