What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

Mechanical Engineering Interns should possess a solid understanding of engineering principles, CAD design, and basic problem-solving, typically supported by progress toward a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, and exposure to industry standards or relevant certifications can be advantageous. Strong teamwork, eagerness to learn, and effective communication set standout interns apart in collaborative project environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to engineering teams, adapting to professional workflows, and developing practical expertise.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Mechanical Engineering Internship?

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as assisting with product design, creating CAD models, conducting prototype testing, and preparing technical documentation. Interns often collaborate closely with full-time engineers and may participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project reviews. The specific projects will depend on the company's focus, but you'll likely gain exposure to real-world engineering challenges and develop your technical and problem-solving skills. This experience not only enhances your resume but also helps you build a professional network and better understand potential career paths within mechanical engineering.

What is a Mechanical Engineering Internship?

A Mechanical Engineering Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of mechanical engineering. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with projects such as designing, testing, and analyzing mechanical systems. The internship provides practical exposure to engineering processes, software, and teamwork, helping students apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. It also allows interns to develop professional skills, build industry connections, and enhance their resumes for future job opportunities.

Job description

About Aalo Atomics
Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we're rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world's first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.
About the role
Join our mechanical engineers in Austin as we design, refine, and scale the manufacturing processes that turn advanced-reactor designs into hardware. Over a 12- to 16-week term you will own a clearly scoped project-from concept through implementation-while gaining daily mentorship and shop-floor experience.
What you'll do
  • Design, build and update 3-D CAD models, detailed drawings, and GD&T.
  • Program and prove out CNC tool-paths on 3-axis mills and 5-axis mill-turn centers alongside machinists.
  • Draft work instructions, router steps, and inspection plans that satisfy ASME and internal quality standards.
  • Collect production data, perform root-cause analysis on non-conformances, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Present your findings and quantified results to engineering leadership at the end of the term.
Qualifications
Required
  • Growth mindset and positive attitude
  • Currently enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering (or closely related field).
  • ≥ 3 months of hands-on engineering experience (course projects, research, internships, student shop, or personal builds).
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM and basic structural or thermal analysis.
  • Able to work full-time, on-site in Austin TX, for at least 12 consecutive weeks.

Preferred
  • GPA 3.4 + and completion of a manufacturing laboratory or capstone design course.
  • ≥ 6 months experience applying GD&T, programming CNC equipment.
  • Familiarity with ISO or AS standards or comparable quality codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technicians in a fast-paced shop environment.

Additional requirements
  • Must provide own housing and daily transportation to the Austin facility; on-site parking is available.
  • Some tasks involve standing, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 25 lbs while wearing PPE.
