Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing detailed machinery designs for custom packaging and automation equipment based on customer requirements and project specifications. This role will support projects from concept through installation, creating equipment layouts, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation while collaborating closely with Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, and Service teams.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in machinery design, automation, and packaging equipment, along with the ability to solve complex engineering challenges and deliver production-ready solutions.
Responsibilities
-Design and develop custom packaging machinery and automation systems based on customer requirements and production needs
-Create machine concepts, layouts, detailed drawings, equipment specifications, BOMs, and cost estimates
-Collaborate with Sales, Customer Service, Project Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams throughout project execution
-Engineer solutions that optimize machine performance, reliability, manufacturability, safety, and cost-effectiveness
-Lead projects from initial design through manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and customer acceptance
-Partner with manufacturing and assembly teams to improve production efficiency and ease of assembly and maintenance
-Provide technical support during design reviews, equipment testing, startup activities, and troubleshooting efforts
-Identify and resolve mechanical, engineering, and production issues through root cause analysis and problem-solving
-Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, BOMs, change orders, and technical manuals
-Evaluate and implement design improvements that enhance machine performance and reduce manufacturing costs
-Collaborate with customers and internal teams to translate operational requirements into scalable engineering solutions
-Support continuous improvement initiatives and standardization efforts across engineering and manufacturing processes
-Ensure all designs comply with applicable safety standards, regulations, and company quality requirements
-Assist in evaluating and integrating new automation technologies and industry best practices
Requirements
-Bachelor's degree in engineering or a combination of relevant education and equivalent hands-on experience
-Minimum of 3 years of experience in packaging machinery, automation equipment, or mechanical design
-Strong understanding of machine design principles and automated equipment development
-Experience creating detailed, production-ready mechanical designs and engineering documentation
-Proficiency with 3D CAD solid modeling software
-Experience integrating robotic systems is highly desirable
-Ability to develop equipment specifications, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation
-Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
-Excellent communication, organizational, and project coordination abilities
-Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, project management, and customer-facing teams
-Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% as project requirements dictate
-Experience with PDM, DriveWorks, and/or Emulate3D is a plus
