Mechanical Engineer Labview information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer specializing in LabVIEW, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mechanical Engineer with a focus on LabVIEW, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, instrumentation, and data acquisition, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in LabVIEW programming, National Instruments hardware, and certifications such as NI Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure precise system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and successful project execution in complex automation and testing environments.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Labview vs Mechanical Test Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineer LabviewMechanical Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; LabVIEW certification beneficialBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; experience with testing standards
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D departments, automation settingsTesting labs, manufacturing facilities, quality assurance
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, automation companies, R&D firmsAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing industries

Mechanical Engineer Labview focuses on designing and developing systems using LabVIEW software, often in automation and control projects. Mechanical Test Engineers primarily conduct testing and quality assurance of mechanical components. While both roles require mechanical engineering knowledge, Labview skills are essential for the Mechanical Engineer Labview, whereas testing expertise is key for the Mechanical Test Engineer.

How does a Mechanical Engineer specializing in LabVIEW typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Mechanical Engineers with LabVIEW expertise often work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and testing teams to design and implement automated test systems. They are responsible for creating LabVIEW programs that interface with hardware, collect data, and analyze system performance. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as they must ensure that the automated solutions meet the requirements of all stakeholders, facilitate troubleshooting, and support iterative product improvements throughout the development lifecycle.

What does a Mechanical Engineer with LabVIEW experience do?

A Mechanical Engineer with LabVIEW experience typically designs, develops, and tests mechanical systems using the LabVIEW software for automation, data acquisition, and control tasks. They create virtual instruments (VIs) to monitor and analyze data from sensors and devices, ensuring systems perform as intended. Their role often involves integrating hardware and software, troubleshooting technical issues, and optimizing test processes for efficiency and accuracy. This combination of mechanical engineering and LabVIEW expertise is especially valuable in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and robotics.

Job description

The Mechanical Controls Design Engineer
will develop innovative designs to challenging engineering problems for a wide variety of applications including but not limited to facility control systems, facility data systems, and unique electro-mechanical systems.
The Engineer will develop detailed design criteria from customer requirements and use strong engineering principles and tools to develop robust and reliable solutions. They will support the development of mechanical subsystems by selecting instruments and devices within accuracy and uncertainty requirements in order for the subsystem to perform its function and allow for proper performance and system health monitoring. Tasks may include electrical motor operated assembly design, hydraulic actuation system design, uncertainty assessment, and device selection and layouts in piping systems.
The Controls Design Engineer will regularly coordinate with engineers from other disciplines and backgrounds to ensure proper design integration. Additionally, the Engineer in this role will work closely with designers and operators to ensure designed hardware is manufacturable and maintainable.

  • Support tasks/projects as an individual contributor or as assigned by the Group Lead
  • Develop design documentation such as presentations, white papers, calculation packages, reports, etc.
  • Perform review of design documentation from other ATS and third-party engineers
  • Present designs and design progress for customer review and feedback
  • Perform various analysis tasks such as uncertainty analysis, heat loads, and response times using appropriate software tools or hand calcs

Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of applicable experience, preferably in instrumentation, data acquisition, and control system development and/or operations
  • Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience within the aerospace industry working at test facilities
  • Experience in electrical schematic and interconnect panel layout design using CAD (preferably AutoCAD)
  • Familiarity with industrial sensors and actuators: pressure, temperature, LVDT, accelerometers, motor controllers, flow meters, relays, strain gauges, valves, and pumps
  • Ability to specify instrumentation wiring needed for various interfacing of data systems and sensors
  • Experience crafting and installing instrumentation and control systems in hazardous areas (NFPA 70 Section 500 installations); Class 1, Division 1, and Division 2 environments
  • Proficiency with electrical diagnostic equipment
  • Understanding of network configuration and other IT fundamentals
  • Familiarity with calibration principles (uncertainty calculation, total error ratios, etc.) and industry calibration standards (ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI NCSL Z540.3).
  • Proficient in noise reduction, shielding, grounding techniques, termination, and analog and digital filtering to provide high-fidelity measurements
  • Understanding of computers and programming languages (LabVIEW, Java, HTML, and/or C++, Python)
