Salary: $110,000-$150,000

Position Description:

Outpost Technologies is seeking an experienced and driven Mechanical Engineer Manager to create innovative solutions to complex challenges across defense, space, and commercial applications while strengthening and expanding the company's core engineering capabilities. This role serves as the technical lead for a small team of 26 mechanical engineers and designers while remaining primarily focused on hands-on engineering and product development activities.


The Candidate will develop mechanical and structural design products for defense, space, and commercial programs. The Candidate will create conceptual designs, support milestone reviews, attend program meetings, draft technical reports, and produce high-quality engineering drawing packages. The majority of the Candidate's time will be spent performing mechanical engineering and design activities, with a smaller portion dedicated to mentoring team members, reviewing engineering work products, coordinating technical priorities, and approving timesheets.

The Candidate will apply sound mechanical engineering principles in the development of machined, structural, fabricated, sheet metal, and composite components. The Candidate will be responsible for requirement definition, bill of material development, configuration management, and execution of assigned engineering tasks. The Candidate will maintain clear communication with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders to ensure successful program execution.


Final designs will require the application of sound engineering processes including design for manufacturing, drawing production, testing, and PDM/PLM configuration management. The Candidate will identify and communicate technical, schedule, and budgetary risks to management while supporting successful project execution.

Communication skills are strongly desired. The Candidate must be self-motivated and consistently produce high-quality work that exceeds customer expectations. The Candidate must always present a professional demeanor while representing Outpost Technologies to customers, vendors, and stakeholders.


The posted compensation range represents the expected pay range for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation may be higher or lower than the stated range based on factors such as relevant experience, education, certifications, specialized expertise, geographic considerations, market conditions, and alignment with internal compensation structures and government contracting requirements.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop conceptual and detailed mechanical designs for aerospace, defense, and commercial applications.
  • Design and analyze machined, structural, fabricated, sheet metal, and composite components and assemblies.
  • Create, review, and release engineering drawings in accordance with ASME Y14 standards.
  • Develop requirements, bills of material, design documentation, and supporting technical reports.
  • Support design reviews, program milestone reviews, customer meetings, and engineering discussions.
  • Apply sound engineering practices, including design for manufacturing, producibility, maintainability, and configuration management.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams, vendors, suppliers, and customers throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support prototyping, testing, manufacturing, integration, and sustainment activities.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate technical, schedule, and programmatic risks.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of 26 mechanical engineers and designers.
  • Review engineering work products to ensure technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with program requirements, as needed.
  • Perform limited administrative responsibilities, including timesheet approval, employee development discussions, and performance feedback.
  • Promote engineering best practices and support continuous improvement initiatives within the mechanical engineering team.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Candidate must have 8+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience. Graduate degrees, military service, or technical accreditations/certifications may be substituted for experience years where applicable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams, projects, or engineering efforts.
  • Candidate must have experience with CAD software and configuration management processes.
  • Candidate must have experience drafting and releasing mechanical drawings per ASME Y14 standards.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, and engineering documentation practices.
  • Candidate must be a resident of or be willing to relocate to the Huntsville North Alabama area.
  • Travel up to 10% per year.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, or supervising small engineering teams.
  • SOLIDWORKS MCAD software package experience.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and modeling software experience.
  • Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Experience with prototyping, manufacturing processes, and production support.
  • Experience with aerospace, defense, launch vehicle, spacecraft, or advanced technology development programs.
  • Experience supporting NASA or DoD requirements development, test plans and procedures, verification activities, or test support.
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain one.
