Job description

Global Technical Systems (GTS) provides innovative, cost-effective, high-tech engineering products and product-based services encompassing latest generation software and hardware solutions and engineering services for defense, homeland security, and other critical Government interests. GTS products and services span a spectrum that includes: mission-critical combat systems processors; C4ISR; technology development including threat detection, biometric identification systems, and composite applications for munitions, armor and energy storage; avionics test systems; and lifecycle logistics support and repair. Our Munitions Department in Huntsville, AL is search for a Mechanical Engineer III to work in-site at our Huntsville, AL location.

General Description:
Participates in the conceptualization, design, development, and testing of new, innovative products. Provides technical support and original design inputs for complex systems, specifically mechanical systems and subsystems for weapons, warheads, and fuze development. Applies system, hardware, and software knowledge, as applicable, to the development of new products from concept through production, and the redesign / modification of existing systems. Performs analyses and trade studies and provides technical input to specifications that support system and component design and enhancement. Evaluates and recommends options and alternatives for system and module level components. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs design and engineering activities for weapons, warheads, and fuze development.
  • Works with team members, including other engineering disciplines and program management, to transfer ideas into core product processes, facilitate / implement design ideas, and improve existing products.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously. Functions as a contributor to cross-functional teams. Reports project status as needed to management and takes necessary steps to maintain project design schedules.
  • Provides original design inputs to the development of complex mechanical engineering projects.
  • Considers approaches and techniques for rapid prototyping, full scale (production) development and test.
  • Conducts technical research and investigations to understand alternate approaches to a problem and / or technical issues. Provides justification and support of the merits of a proposed solution to senior staff members.
  • Prepares requirements documents and detailed specifications, as required, to define and allocate requirements to systems and system components.
  • Provides technical consultation to the engineering team.
  • Review’s drawings and technical papers for compliance with project / program requirements.
  • Evaluates vendor capabilities for providing the required level of performance of products and / or services.
  • Interacts with customers, vendors, engineers, production personnel and program management to successfully complete projects.
Work Experience Requirements:
8-10 years relevant engineering experience in a mechanical engineering discipline.
Educational Requirements:
BS/BA in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering-Science
Working Conditions:
This work is typically performed in an office and occasional outdoor environment.
  • Office work includes working at a desk and in a collaborative space with some physical effort of handling light materials, product integration/assembly, and equipment.
  • Outdoor work includes physical ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, being in proximity to explosives and explosives operations, and all seasons.
Essential Skills/Experience:
  • Proficiency using Computer-Aided Design tools (e.g., Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD) and Finite Element Analysis software (e.g., Nastran, ANSYS, other DoW codes) as applicable.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering in area of expertise, and capability to support other mechanical engineering related disciplines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in highly collaborative teams.
  • Ability to accurately articulate concepts, theories and system design attributes to technical team members.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical information.
  • Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. (e.g., Costpoint)
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoW security clearance
  • All candidates must be able to pass a drug test.
