Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee information

What does a mechanical design engineer trainee do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee assists in designing, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems under the supervision of experienced engineers. Typical duties include creating 2D and 3D models using CAD software, conducting research, preparing documentation, and supporting prototype development. As a trainee, you will learn industry standards, gain hands-on experience, and gradually take on more responsibility as you build your technical skills. This role is ideal for recent graduates looking to start a career in mechanical engineering and design.

What kinds of projects and tasks can a mechanical design engineer trainee expect to work on during their first year?

As a Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee, you will typically be involved in supporting senior engineers with drafting, modeling, and testing components or assemblies. Expect to use CAD software to create detailed drawings, participate in design reviews, and assist in prototyping or product testing activities. Early projects often focus on learning company standards, understanding manufacturing processes, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, quality, and procurement. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation and helps you build both technical and teamwork skills essential for advancing in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, CAD design, and problem-solving, generally supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and knowledge of engineering standards are commonly expected. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help trainees excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are vital for producing accurate designs, contributing to project teams, and developing into a capable engineer.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Engineer TraineeMechanical Design Engineer
QualificationsTypically pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mechanical EngineeringBachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with relevant experience
Work EnvironmentInternship or training programs within engineering firms or manufacturing companiesFull-time professional role in design departments or engineering firms
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in design tasks, learning CAD software, supporting senior engineersCreating detailed mechanical designs, analyzing prototypes, and collaborating on projects

The main difference is that a Mechanical Design Engineer Trainee is in a learning or internship phase, focusing on gaining skills and experience, while a Mechanical Design Engineer is a fully qualified professional responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems.

Are mechanical design engineer trainees in demand?

Mechanical design engineer trainees are in demand as companies seek entry-level engineers with skills in CAD software, problem-solving, and understanding of manufacturing processes. The demand is driven by ongoing infrastructure, automotive, and aerospace projects, with opportunities increasing as industries adopt new technologies and sustainable practices.

How to start as a mechanical design engineer trainee?

To start as a mechanical design engineer trainee, obtain a relevant bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Develop skills in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and seek internships or entry-level positions to gain practical experience in designing mechanical components and systems.

Job description

Hadrian - Manufacturing the Future

Hadrian is building autonomous factories that help aerospace and defense companies manufacture rockets, satellites, jets, and ships up to 10x faster and up to 2x cheaper. By combining advanced software, robotics, and fullโ€‘stack manufacturing, we are reinventing how America produces its most critical parts.

Weโ€™re accelerating our mission with the launch of Factory 3 in Mesa, Arizona, a 290,000โ€‘squareโ€‘foot facility creating 350 new jobs. We are expanding rapidly to support thousands of future hires, launching Hadrian Maritime to expand into naval production, and introducing a Factory-as-a-Service model that delivers complete systems instead of individual parts.

Hadrian is backed by leading investors including T. Rowe Price, Lux Capital, Founders Fund, and Andreessen Horowitz, our fast-growing team is united around reindustrializing American manufacturing for the 21st century and beyond.

The Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of custom industrial machinery, automation equipment, robotic tooling, and mechanical systems. This role owns mechanical design activities from concept through manufacturing, assembly, testing, and commissioning. The ideal candidate combines strong CAD expertise with handsโ€‘on knowledge of fabrication, manufacturing, and automated equipment, while collaborating across engineering and operations teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical systems, machine assemblies, fixtures, tooling, and robotic endโ€‘ofโ€‘arm tooling (EOAT) using 3D CAD software.

  • Create manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and engineering documentation while applying GD&T and designโ€‘forโ€‘manufacturing principles.

  • Support fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, prototype builds, and testing activities to ensure successful execution of designs.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing, controls, project management, suppliers, and technicians to develop and improve equipment and processes.

  • Support design reviews, troubleshooting, startup, commissioning, and continuous improvement efforts to optimize performance, reliability, and cost.

Requirements
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • 2+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial, manufacturing, automation, or related environments.

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D parametric CAD software.

  • Understanding of machining, welding, fabrication, assembly processes, engineering drawings, and GD&T.

  • Strong problemโ€‘solving, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in crossโ€‘functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing custom machinery, automation equipment, robotics, fixtures, tooling, or EOAT systems.

  • Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, vacuum, motion control, or sensorโ€‘integrated mechanical systems.

  • Handsโ€‘on experience supporting prototype builds, equipment assembly, testing, and commissioning.

  • Familiarity with FEA, engineering analysis tools, or mechanical simulation methods.

  • Experience working in manufacturing, startup, or fastโ€‘paced engineering environments.

Benefits
  • 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans for employees.

  • 401k.

  • Relocation stipend or support as appropriate.

  • Flexible vacation policy.

  • Equity.
