What does a mechanical design engineer in robotics do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer in Robotics is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems used in robotic devices. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed models and drawings, select appropriate materials, and ensure that the mechanical aspects of the robot meet performance and safety standards. These engineers collaborate closely with electrical and software engineers to integrate mechanical systems with electronic controls. Their work is vital for building reliable, efficient, and innovative robotic solutions across various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer in robotics?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer in Robotics, you need strong proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, 3D CAD modeling, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, knowledge of robotics systems, and certifications such as EIT or PE can be advantageous. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the efficient design and integration of robotic systems, leading to innovative solutions and successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges mechanical design engineers face when working on robotics projects, and how can they be addressed?

Mechanical Design Engineers in robotics often encounter challenges such as integrating complex electromechanical systems, managing tight tolerances, and ensuring reliability under various operational conditions. Collaborating closely with electrical and software engineers is crucial to align design specifications and resolve integration issues early. To address these challenges, engineers typically engage in iterative prototyping, frequent cross-functional meetings, and rigorous testing to validate designs before full-scale production. Emphasizing clear communication and adaptability helps ensure that mechanical solutions meet the evolving needs of the robotics project.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer Robotics vs Mechanical Design Engineer Automation?

AspectMechanical Design Engineer RoboticsMechanical Design Engineer Automation
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Automation certifications
Work EnvironmentRobotics labs, manufacturing plants, research facilitiesIndustrial plants, manufacturing lines, automation system design
Employer & Industry UsageRobotics companies, tech firms, research institutionsManufacturing, process industries, automation solution providers

Both roles involve mechanical design skills, but Robotics engineers focus on designing robotic systems and integrating sensors and actuators, while Automation engineers concentrate on automating manufacturing processes and systems. The choice depends on whether the emphasis is on robotic technology or process automation within industrial settings.

Location: Holland, MI
Company: GableTek
Industry: Automation | Custom Machinery | Automated Assembly

Position Overview

GableTek is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Design Engineer to support custom automation and automated assembly projects in Holland, Michigan.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing custom automated machinery, assembly equipment, robotic systems, and special-purpose machines. This position will take mechanical designs from initial concept and layout through detailed design, manufacturing release, build, and validation.

Experience with Creo Parametric is strongly preferred, although candidates with strong SolidWorks experience will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop custom automated assembly equipment, production machinery, and industrial automation systems.
  • Develop mechanical concepts, machine layouts, detailed assemblies, and component designs from initial requirements through final release.
  • Create detailed manufacturing drawings, BOMs, specifications, and supporting engineering documentation.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, component sizing, and mechanical evaluations.
  • Select and integrate mechanical, pneumatic, motion control, and automation components.
  • Apply GD&T, DFM, and sound machine-design principles throughout the design process.
  • Support equipment build, prototype development, testing, validation, troubleshooting, and customer demonstrations.
  • Participate in formal design reviews and incorporate feedback from Project Engineers and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, controls engineering, systems integration, suppliers, and project teams.
  • Ensure equipment designs meet requirements for safety, functionality, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Maintain accurate revisions and engineering changes through the design lifecycle.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting aggressive project schedules.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience involving custom automation, automated assembly equipment, robotics, special machines, or industrial machinery.
  • Proficiency with Creo Parametric preferred; strong SolidWorks experience will also be considered.
  • Experience with Windchill PDM/PLM or similar engineering data-management systems.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical machine design and automated assembly systems.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and mechanical systems, motion-control components, and component selection.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Ability to independently execute complete machine designs with minimal supervision.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams.
