What does a mechanical design analysis engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to model and test designs under various conditions. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, reviewing technical drawings, and optimizing designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, they may be involved in prototype testing and troubleshooting to resolve any design issues before manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design analysis engineer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design and analysis methodologies, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and relevant industry codes or certifications (like PE licensure) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical findings. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient products and effective resolution of design challenges.

How does a mechanical design analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Mechanical Design Analysis Engineers often work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development process. They provide critical analysis and simulation data to help refine designs, ensure manufacturability, and verify that products meet safety and performance standards. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, allowing for real-time feedback and iterative improvements. This collaborative environment ensures that the final product is optimized from both a design and engineering perspective.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Analysis EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing mechanical systems for performance, stress, and durabilityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsFEM, CAD, analytical tools, engineering degreesCAD, design software, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign validation labs, simulation software, R&D teamsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, R&DProduct development, manufacturing, engineering firms

Both roles require engineering degrees and CAD skills, but the Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer specializes in evaluating and testing mechanical systems through analysis, while the Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing new mechanical designs.

Senior Mechanical Engineer 3 – Test Equipment
Location: Tucson, AZ
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract with Legion Technical Solutions
Industry: Aerospace & Defense
Clearance: Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance Required
Design the Test Systems Behind Advanced Defense Technology
Legion Technical Solutions is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer – Test Equipment to support one of the nation's premier aerospace and defense technology organizations.
This role is ideal for a mechanical engineer who enjoys taking complex test equipment from concept through detailed design, integration, validation, and production support. You'll develop mechanical solutions used to test sophisticated defense systems across demanding vibration, thermal, hydraulic, RF, and electro-optical environments.
What You'll Be Doing
As part of an experienced engineering team, you'll help design, develop, document, and maintain advanced mechanical test systems.
Key responsibilities include:
* Design mechanical systems, fixtures, and components for advanced production test equipment.
* Develop detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using ProE / CREO Parametric.
* Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability, fit, and performance.
* Develop innovative mechanical solutions for vibration, thermal, hydraulic, RF, and electro-optical test environments.
* Support test equipment integration, troubleshooting, verification, and validation.
* Ensure designs meet stringent performance, reliability, and production requirements.
* Develop and maintain engineering documentation and configuration-controlled design data.
* Collaborate with electrical, systems, software, manufacturing, and test engineers throughout the development lifecycle.
* Support existing test equipment while contributing to new test system development.
What We're Looking For
Strong candidates will bring:
* 3–5 years of relevant Mechanical Engineering experience.
* Experience designing mechanical systems, test equipment, fixtures, or related hardware.
* Strong 3D CAD design and modeling experience, preferably ProE / CREO Parametric.
* Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis.
* Experience developing and maintaining engineering drawings and technical documentation.
* Understanding of configuration management and controlled engineering environments.
* Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related STEM discipline.
* Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance is required for consideration.
Experience with aerospace/defense products, production test equipment, environmental testing, or highly regulated engineering environments will be particularly valuable.
Why This Opportunity?
This position provides the opportunity to work at the intersection of mechanical engineering and advanced test technology. Rather than focusing exclusively on product design, you'll develop the specialized equipment required to prove that sophisticated defense systems perform reliably under demanding real-world conditions.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers while contributing directly to the successful production and delivery of mission-critical technology.
