What is mechanic shadowing?

Mechanic shadowing is the process of observing and learning from a professional mechanic as they work on vehicles or machinery. It is typically done by students, apprentices, or individuals interested in pursuing a career in automotive repair or maintenance. During shadowing, participants watch the mechanic perform diagnostics, repairs, and routine maintenance, gaining practical insights into the trade. This hands-on experience helps individuals understand the daily responsibilities, required skills, and work environment of a mechanic. Mechanic shadowing can also be a valuable networking opportunity for those seeking entry-level positions or apprenticeships.

What can I expect from a typical day while shadowing a mechanic?

While shadowing a mechanic, you can expect to observe and assist with a variety of automotive repair and maintenance tasks, such as diagnostics, part replacements, and routine services like oil changes. You'll likely work alongside experienced mechanics, gaining hands-on exposure to tools and equipment in a workshop or garage setting. This experience often involves interacting with team members, learning safety protocols, and understanding workflow organization. Shadowing helps you build foundational knowledge and clarify expectations for a career as a mechanic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a mechanic shadowing role?

To excel in a Mechanic Shadowing role, you need basic mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and a foundational understanding of automotive systems, often supported by enrollment in a technical program or related coursework. Familiarity with common hand tools, diagnostic software, and safety protocols is advantageous. Strong observation skills, attention to detail, and good communication help you absorb knowledge and build rapport with experienced mechanics. These skills ensure you gain practical experience efficiently and develop a solid groundwork for a future career as a mechanic.

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina Children's Hospital has an open rank, full time faculty position for a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician (DBP) to work in our growing Development, Behavior and Learning Program. This program provides outpatient services through interprofessional care delivered by DBP, psychology, social work, and nursing. Services include assessment and ongoing care for children with or at risk for developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, genetic conditions, and other related disorders.
The DBP program provides an integral role in the training and education of pediatric residents and other learners. This faculty position will include participation in resident didactics, shadowing and supervision, and ultimately assistance in our future goal of developing a DBP fellowship. Given that UNC has a rich tradition of care for children with developmental disabilities, this role will also include close collaboration with UNC's Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, the highest funded autism research center in the country and a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) site and UNC's TEACCH program.
This position will be located in the Division of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics, a newly formed Division within the Department of Pediatrics at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The creation of this newly formed Division is one of many examples of the Department's commitment to the care of children with developmental disabilities. In addition to DBP, other key members of the Division include psychology, social work and nursing. Applicants should be board certified or eligible in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Applicants from groups under-represented in medicine are especially encouraged to apply.
The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina is an attractive place to live and work with great climate, schools, and both mountains and beach within a day drive.
