Shop Mechanic Helper

The Shop Mechanic Helper plays an important support role within fleet and field operations by assisting mechanics, maintaining shop readiness, and helping ensure agency vehicles remain safe, reliable, and missionready. Key duties such as organizing the shop, performing basic preventive maintenance, learning inspection procedures, and interacting with personnel directly support the agency's goals of safety, efficiency, and dependable service delivery.

• Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment, which helps mechanics operate more efficiently and reduces workplace hazards.
• Learns and applies proper personal protection equipment and safety procedures, reinforcing FDOT's commitment to safe operations.
• Supports fleet reliability by assisting with basic preventative maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, belt and hose changes, fluid services, and basic brake work.
• Enhances overall vehicle safety through walkaround inspections, checking tire condition, lights, belts, hoses, and emergency equipment.
• Helps ensure vehicles meet operational standards by assisting with reflective striping, fire extinguisher and first aid kit installation, and bulb/light replacements.
• Builds foundational knowledge in work order documentation, improving maintenance tracking and operational transparency.
• Supports customer service by learning how to interact professionally with personnel, reinforcing positive internal relationships within the agency.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Gain knowledge, skills and experience in the Transportation Industry.  Perform routine tasks under direct supervision from the below track within a work unit within the department.  Engage in research and provide insights to support initiatives.  Interact with executive leadership, team leads, project managers, fellow interns, and external partners.  Actively participate in team projects, contribute to agency goals, and assist in driving change within the organization.

Gain general knowledge, and perform technical tasks within the following focused track:

Transportation Track - (Any majors, explores transportation, in general, and how the agency contributes to providing a safe, efficient transportation system) Transportation Overview, Program Management, Work Program, Modal, Planning, Project Management, Construction, Traffic Operations, Maintenance, Safety

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

• • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • High School Diploma or Certificate of High school Equivalency.
