Mechanic Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a mechanic design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

Job description

Job Title: Specialist, Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Code: 40480

Job Location: Orlando, FL

Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a motivated, early-career Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. This role supports the design and development of mechanical hardware for aerospace and defense systems, including structural assemblies, component installations, brackets, support equipment, and related hardware used in flight and ground applications. The position focuses on translating system and customer requirements into detailed, manufacturable designs and engineering documentation that satisfy performance, environmental, weight, and size constraints. Working under general supervision, this role independently develops mechanical design solutions, collaborates with cross-functional teams inside and outside the department, recommends improvements to design practices, and supports products through development, integration, test, and production. This position is located in Orlando, FL.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform technical mechanical design tasks and prepare detailed engineering documentation, with guidance from experienced engineers, for hardware used in flight and ground support applications. Hardware may include structural assemblies, component installations, brackets, machined parts, sheet metal parts, electromechanical assemblies, and support equipment.
  • Assist with updating design documentation through notice of revision (NOR) and tracking engineering changes through product data management (PDM) systems.
  • Support production, manufacturing, integration, and test activities through investigation and troubleshooting of engineering change requests (ECRs), build issues, and non-conformance concerns, while working with cross-functional teams to help identify practical design solutions.
  • Work with Integrated Product Teams to support execution of assigned design tasks within established schedules and program priorities.
  • Work from higher-level documentation and customer requirements to support detailed mechanical design activities, and participate in internal design reviews with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience, or a Graduate Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with Creo Parametric , especially detail part design, large assembly management, and drawing documentation.
  • Familiarity with aerospace structure design, including structural assemblies, component installations, and bracket design..
  • Experience with material selection, sheet metal design practices, basic machining practices, and aerospace hardware selection.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 and generating detailed engineering drawings and documentation for parts, assemblies, and installations.
  • Experience preparing part lists, engineering change documentation, and impact assessments.
  • Experience supporting production, manufacturing, integration, and test activities, including resolution of build issues and non-conformance concerns.
  • Ability to review engineering designs and drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with requirements.
  • Experience preparing conceptual models and supporting design reviews.
  • Understanding of mechanical analysis considerations and techniques used for initial sizing and design verification.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical professionals at all levels.
  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
