Job description

Scope of Job: This position requires a highly skilled Senior Pet Food Scientist with deep expertise in formulating and processing shelf-stable pet food products using human-grade ingredients. This role will be responsible for leading the development of complete and complementary pet food items, including meals and toppers designed for thermal processing via retort. The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge of companion animal nutrition, regulatory compliance (AAFCO, FDA, USDA), and food safety systems, with a strong background in formulation science and process validation.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop species-specific formulations (canine and feline) that meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for various life stages
  • Balance macronutrient and micronutrient profiles using human-grade ingredients, ensuring digestibility, palatability, and bioavailability
  • Utilize nutrient databases and formulation software (e.g., Concept5, ESHA Genesis) to model and optimize recipes
  • Design toppers and supplemental products that complement complete diets and enhance feeding experiences
  • Lead product development for retorted pet food products, including pouch, tray, and other formats
  • Coordinate and lead palatability testing, confirmation analytical testing, and any additional third-party testing required for successful project launches
  • Optimize ingredient functionality and texture under high-temperature conditions
  • Prepare and review product labels, ingredient statements, and nutritional adequacy claims
  • Collaborate with QA/QC teams to establish specifications, conduct sensory and analytical testing, and monitor batch consistency
  • Work with procurement to source novel and standard human-grade ingredients
  • Develop expertise in developing private label products for human consumption including rice, soups, sauces, and other products as needed.
  • Collaborate with production and support departments to ensure food safety and the quality of our products.

Education: BS in Foods Science, Animal Nutrition, Food Science, Meat Science, or Similar

Experience:

  • 7+ years in pet food R&D, with direct experience in retorted product development
  • Proficient in nutrient formulation software and calculations
  • Strong understanding of ingredient functionality, food microbiology, and HACCP principles
  • Demonstrated success in launching certified pet food products in regulated markets
  • Knowledge of palatability testing protocols and consumer sensory panels
  • Passion for advancing pet health through science-driven innovation
