Job description

Definition Under general supervision of the Construction Superintendent, provides skilled carpentry services with drywall installation and repair, framing, cabinet installations, ramps, stairs, and flooring replacements by utilizing various types of flooring materials. Supervises the training and development of assigned subordinates and apprentices; prepares schedules and estimates of materials, labor and equipment for the carpentry related portions of projects or service orders undertaken by the Construction Division of the Engineering and Construction Services Department. This job class is considered a working supervisor and treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and considered a DRIVING position which may be required to work on call and weekend hours.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Supervises, instructs, develops and evaluates field personnel and assigned apprentices; estimates and evaluates carpentry related portions of construction projects and service orders; verifies materials requirements and availability. Monitors and records project and service order time, attendance and total work time for assigned carpentry crew. 2.

Assists Construction Superintendent in evaluating and recommending solutions for carpentry portions of projects and service orders. 3. Assists Construction Superintendent in preparing comprehensive material estimates and bids for carpentry related portions of projects and service orders.

Prepares material inventory lists for carpentry related portions of projects and service orders (e.g. material control, layout, and training). 4

Schedules carpentry related portions of projects and service orders according to their start and completion dates. Coordinates schedules with other construction crews to avoid scheduling conflicts. 5.

Constructs and repairs structural woodwork and equipment in an establishment, working from blueprints, drawings, work orders or oral instructions. Builds, repairs, and installs counter tops, cabinets, ramps, roofs, concrete work, stairs, floors, windows, doors, building framework, and trim. 6.

Safely operates electrical/power/manual tools and equipment, including but not limited to generators and compressors, and other equipment used in the carpentry portions of construction projects and service orders. Hand tools may include, but are not limited to: Hammer, Drill, Table Saw, Skilsaw, Cope Saw, Speed Square, Tape Measure, Sawzall, Miter Saw, Utility knife, Tool bags. 7.

Oversees and assists in loading and unloading of equipment and materials at job sites; safely drives to and from job site. Operates pickup truck, forklift, or skip loader, as well as other equipment required by Construction Superintendent. 8.

Oversees and assists in measuring, cutting, lifting, and fastening of lumber, drywall, roofing, insulation, doors, concrete forms, windows, cabinets and trim in the construction and maintenance of single family housing, Community buildings, and SRPMIC infrastructure. Verifies trueness of structures with plumb bob and carpenters' level; prepares layout, using ruler, framing square and calipers. 9.

Reads and interprets engineered plans or work narratives. 10. Inspects new woodwork installations for conformity to building and safety codes; ensures workplace environment conforms to OSHA and other appropriate safety standards.

11. Monitors work in progress; provides weekly and quarterly updates on project schedules for carpentry portions of construction projects and service orders. Assists Construction Superintendent by maintaining and submitting daily, weekly, and quarterly work logs for carpentry portions of projects and service orders.

12. Assists Construction Superintendent in preparing requests for grant related reimbursements on applicable carpentry related portions of projects and service orders. 13.

Ensures the removal of abandoned materials as necessary to provide construction and maintenance of single family housing, Community buildings, and SRPMIC infrastructure. 14. Performs other job related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of carpentry methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment related to construction and maintenance of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. Knowledge of general policies, procedures and standards followed in construction trades. Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations pertaining to construction and maintenance of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, and related systems.

Knowledge of current building and safety codes. Knowledge of principles, concepts, methods, techniques and practices related to estimating the costs for the carpentry portions of construction and maintenance of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.. Knowledge of principles, concepts, methods, techniques, and practices related to scheduling the carpentry portions of construction and maintenance of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.

Knowledge of proper use of carpentry equipment and tools; knowledge in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, and sketches. Knowledge of inventory control and the purchasing of materials and equipment. Skill in determining work solutions and evaluating construction work in progress for carpentry portions of construction and maintenance projects.

Skill and accuracy in measuring, cutting and fastening lumber, drywall, roofing and trim in the construction and maintenance of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.. Skill in the proper inspection, installation and repair of carpentry fixtures and equipment. Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and equipment

Skill in leading and directing work crew by effective example. Ability to community efficiently and effectively both in writing and verbally. Ability to supervise, instruct and evaluate personnel.

Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions. Ability to work in weather-exposed situation. Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.

Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to carpentry tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 - 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete carpentry tasks as directed by Construction Superintendent. Minimum Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED.

Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC. Experience: Two (2) years field experience as journeyman carpenter plus two (2) years of experience in carpentry supervision or construction management. Journeyman Certification Preferred.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill3 Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered. Special Requirements Employment is contingent upon successful completion of an extensive background check and drug screening. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
