Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, defense, where modeling is keyBroad industry use including aerospace, IT, manufacturing

While both roles involve systems thinking and modeling, an Mbse Engineer primarily focuses on creating and managing system models using MBSE tools and methodologies. A Systems Engineer has a broader scope, including requirements management, system integration, and project oversight. The roles often overlap but differ in focus and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MBSE Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) Engineer, you need expertise in systems engineering principles, requirements analysis, and model development, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with modeling tools such as SysML, MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, or Cameo Systems Modeler and relevant certifications like INCOSE CSEP are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help MBSE Engineers collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and convey complex ideas clearly. These skills are crucial for designing, integrating, and validating complex systems efficiently while minimizing errors and ensuring project success.

What are some common challenges MBSE Engineers face when integrating model-based systems engineering into existing workflows?

MBSE Engineers often encounter challenges when introducing model-based approaches into organizations that have traditionally relied on document-based processes. This can include resistance to change from team members, the need to align different tools and data formats, and ensuring that all stakeholders understand and trust the models being created. Successful MBSE Engineers typically address these challenges by promoting clear communication, offering training sessions, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of MBSE, such as improved traceability and early error detection. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and providing ongoing support are also key factors in smooth integration.

What is an MBSE Engineer?

An MBSE Engineer is a professional who specializes in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), a methodology that uses models to support the requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation of complex systems. Instead of relying solely on traditional documents, MBSE Engineers use modeling tools and standards to create a comprehensive and integrated system model. This approach improves communication, reduces errors, and enhances system design and analysis throughout a project's lifecycle. MBSE Engineers often work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and manufacturing where complex system integration is required.

Job description

Overview
The Sr. SysMSL Engineer supports the United States Space Force (USSF) for the Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program, establishing, implementing, and facilitating a common Integrated Digital Environment (IDE) platform.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and enforce model governance standards. Review vendor models for quality, completeness, consistency, style-guide compliance, federation readiness, and traceability. Support model submission reviews, issue identification, and technical analysis packages.
  • Support the Design and Architectural Working Group in developing, clarifying, amending, or otherwise maintaining model governance and coordinating collaborative workflows, such as documenting and submitting the "to-be" branch for validation and transition to the main branch.
  • Incorporate and publish updates to model governance from the government's concurrence to adjudicated amendments.
  • Support the capture and maintenance of the Common Architecture Baseline (CAB), including Modular System Interfaces, in the form of a "digital master" model with defined interfaces that each vendor can complete with internal details of the elements.
  • Collaboratively develop the CAB during the requirements discovery and architectural development phase of the GBRD Program (Gate 1 out of 3 total), during which both vendors will refine and align their proposed designs to one common architecture and level of modularity.
  • Continuously validate Prime Contractor system models against the Government-provided 'GBRD Enterprise MBSE/MOSA Standards Document(s)' for correctness, consistency, and compliance.
  • Generate regular 'model compliance scorecards' for each Prime and deliver them to the Government and the CAGB to continuously validate all Radar Vendor models.
  • Conduct continuous validation to accommodate GBRD Awardees; perform monthly program reviews with GBRD Awardees.
  • Collect and formalize the MOSA standard as it pertains to GBRD architecture, and develop MOSA Compliance Evaluation Criteria to grade radar designs
  • Develop and implement a model submission process for version tracking
  • Assess models against governance standards.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree required in systems engineering, engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or related technical discipline. Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of systems engineering or digital engineering experience, including 5+ years of hands-on SysML/Cameo model development, model governance, model quality review, or model validation.
  • Secret Clearance
