What is an MBA intern?

An MBA Intern is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) who takes on a temporary role within a company to gain practical experience. These internships typically last for a few months and provide hands-on exposure to business functions such as strategy, marketing, finance, consulting, or operations. MBA interns work on projects, analyze data, and contribute to key business decisions while building their professional network. Employers use these internships to assess potential full-time hires, making it a valuable opportunity for both the intern and the company.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an MBA intern?

As an MBA Intern, you may be assigned to projects involving market research, financial modeling, strategic analysis, or process improvement, depending on your placement and the company's current needs. Interns frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, analyze business data, prepare reports or presentations, and may even present findings to senior leadership. The nature of the work is designed to provide practical exposure to core business functions, allowing you to apply classroom theories to real business challenges. This hands-on experience is valuable for developing a strong skillset and building a professional network in your chosen industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the MBA intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MBA Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of business concepts, strong analytical abilities, and enrollment in or recent completion of an MBA program. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and occasionally CRM or business intelligence platforms is often expected. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help interns contribute to projects and build relationships within their teams. These competencies enable MBA Interns to effectively support organizational initiatives, gain meaningful experience, and prepare for future leadership roles.

Which internship is best for MBA students?

The best internship for MBA students depends on their career goals, but generally, internships in consulting, finance, marketing, or management provide valuable experience. These roles often involve project management, data analysis, and strategic planning, and may require skills in Excel, PowerPoint, or industry-specific tools. Selecting an internship aligned with your desired industry and skill development can enhance future job prospects.

Job description

Location: Baton Rouge, LA
Organization: Renal Associates

Lead the Business Behind Exceptional Patient Care

Renal Associates is seeking an accomplished healthcare executive to lead the business operations of our dynamic physician practice. This is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic, financially savvy leader who enjoys partnering closely with physicians to drive operational excellence, organizational growth, and long-term financial success.

Renal Associates is the region's leading nephrology practice, with 25 physicians and advanced practice providers serving patients across four outpatient clinics, 25 dialysis facilities, and four hospital systems throughout the Greater Baton Rouge area. Supported by a team of nearly 50 employees, the practice is committed to clinical excellence, operational innovation, and delivering exceptional patient care.

The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative leader of the practice and is responsible for the organization's financial performance, human resources, operations, risk management, regulatory compliance, and strategic initiatives. This is a hands‑on executive leadership role for someone who is equally comfortable developing long‑term strategy and rolling up their sleeves to analyze financial data, improve operational performance, and solve complex business challenges.

What You'll Do

As Executive Director, you will:

  • Lead all business and administrative operations of the practice.
  • Produce, analyze, and present financial reports that support informed decision‑making by physician partners.
  • Oversee accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and internal financial controls.
  • Drive operational efficiency across clinical support services, revenue cycle, information technology, facilities, and administrative functions.
  • Lead human resources strategy, including recruitment, employee engagement, performance management, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, employment laws, and organizational policies while managing enterprise risk.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives that support practice growth, physician recruitment, service line expansion, and operational excellence.
  • Build strong relationships with physicians, managers, employees, and external business partners.
What We're Looking For

We're seeking an experienced healthcare executive who combines strong business acumen with collaborative leadership.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 7–10+ years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.
  • Experience leading physician practice operations or ambulatory healthcare organizations.
  • Strong accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting experience.
  • Demonstrated success improving operational performance and organizational efficiency.
  • Experience overseeing human resources, compliance, and organizational development.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field required.
  • MBA, MHA, or related graduate degree preferred.
Why Join Renal Associates?

This is an opportunity to become a trusted partner to physician leadership and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of a respected medical practice. The Executive Director has the opportunity to influence strategy, strengthen financial performance, build an exceptional organizational culture, and help position the practice for continued growth and success.

If you are an experienced healthcare executive who enjoys building high‑performing organizations while making a meaningful impact on patient care, we encourage you to apply.
