Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer information

What does a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer do?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer uses Matlab and Simulink software to design, simulate, and analyze mechanical systems and control algorithms. They create models that represent mechanical components and systems, run simulations to predict performance, and optimize designs before physical prototypes are built. This role is commonly found in industries like automotive, aerospace, and robotics, where modeling and simulation help reduce development time and costs. The engineer also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the systems meet technical and safety requirements.

How does a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer frequently works alongside electrical engineers, controls engineers, and software developers to design and simulate complex mechanical systems. Collaboration usually involves participating in design reviews, sharing simulation results to inform hardware decisions, and integrating models with other engineering domains. Effective communication and regular meetings are key, as these engineers translate mechanical requirements into simulation models that must align closely with the work of other team members. This collaborative environment not only ensures the accuracy of the overall system but also provides opportunities to learn from diverse engineering perspectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer?

To thrive as a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles, system modeling, and simulation, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with Matlab, Simulink, and related toolboxes, along with familiarity with control systems or automotive modeling standards such as ISO 26262, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and convey technical concepts clearly. These skills ensure accurate modeling, efficient development processes, and successful integration of mechanical systems in multidisciplinary environments.

What is the difference between Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMatlab Simulink Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusModeling, simulation, and analysis of mechanical systems using Matlab SimulinkDesigning, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems
Required SkillsProficiency in Matlab/Simulink, mechanical engineering principles, system modelingCAD software, mechanical design, prototyping, and manufacturing knowledge
Work EnvironmentEngineering labs, simulation environments, software developmentDesign studios, manufacturing facilities, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, control systemsConsumer products, machinery, industrial equipment

Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineers focus on system modeling and simulation, while Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating physical mechanical components. Both roles require a strong foundation in mechanical engineering but differ in their core tasks and tools used.

Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Develop innovative designs to challenge engineering problems for a wide variety of applications related to the development of several high‑speed aerospace ground test facilities.

The engineer will perform as a task lead on a number of projects, as an individual contributor in others, and will review and approve peer designs they oversee as needed. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will develop detailed design criteria from customer requirements and use strong engineering principles and tools to develop robust and reliable solutions from the earliest conceptual stages through detailed design. Designs are expected to include hardware such as test fixtures, custom mechanical assemblies, pressure vessels, piping systems, weldments, etc. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will regularly coordinate with engineers from other disciplines and backgrounds to ensure proper design integration. Additionally, the engineer in this role will work closely with designers and operators to ensure designed hardware is manufacturable and maintainable. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will mentor and train junior engineers through on‑the‑job training and dedicated mentorship activities.

Applications may include:
  • Sizing and conceptual/preliminary design of high‑speed ground test facility systems (e.g., blowdown and continuous high‑speed wind tunnels, arc‑jet facilities, aeropropulsion test cells, etc.)
  • Sizing and conceptual/preliminary design of industrial process air systems (e.g., high‑pressure air, vacuum, and hydraulics systems, heaters, flow control valves, etc.) to meet ground‑test facility requirements
  • Detailed design of high‑speed ground test facility systems, subsystems, and components (e.g., high‑pressure piping systems, hydraulic systems, converging/diverging nozzles, test sections, test article and probe support systems, diffusers and exhaust processing, etc.)
Duties:
  • Develop innovative designs for custom mechanical and structural hardware.
  • Perform structural, thermodynamic, thermal‑structural, and flow analyses (including aerothermal) using hand calculations or appropriate software tools to validate mechanical designs.
  • Develop design documentation such as presentations, white papers, calculation packages, reports, etc.
  • Own and manage projects as a technical task lead, ensuring technical rigor and compliance with requirements.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers to develop strong problem solving, critical thinking, and engineering processes.
  • Perform review of design documentation from other ATS and third‑party engineers.
  • Present designs and design progress for customer review and feedback.
Requirements:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, current.
  • Background in mechanical systems, materials, civil/structural, aerofluids and/or thermal systems.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • BS in engineering or related field (equivalent experience may be accepted).
  • Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance.
  • Desired experience or familiarity with ANSYS or ABAQUS, RISA, Revit, CAESAR, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow/Fathom, MATHCAD, MATLAB/Simulink or Python, and REFPROP.
  • Familiarity with CAD modelling, drawing development and GD&T.
  • Experience applying engineering codes and standards such as ASME BPVC, ASME B31.3, AISC 360‑10, AWS D1.1, ASME Y14.5, etc.
