What is a MATLAB developer?

A MATLAB developer is an expert at using the MATLAB software developed by a company called MathWorks. As a MATLAB developer, your duties vary depending on the needs of your employer or clients. MATLAB is a matrix laboratory that allows you to manipulate matrices, perform numerical analysis, apply algorithms, and create user interfaces. Your responsibilities may include using your programming and coding skills to design a MATLAB application that can interface with programs written in other languages such as C++ or Python. You also perform maintenance and provide support for people who use your applications.

What are some common challenges Matlab developers face when integrating Matlab code with other programming environments?

Matlab Developers often encounter challenges when integrating Matlab code with other programming languages or enterprise systems, such as ensuring compatibility, managing data transfer, and optimizing performance. Converting Matlab algorithms into deployable components or integrating with Python, C++, or Java applications can require additional toolboxes or software bridges. Close collaboration with software engineers and clear documentation are essential to streamline this process and maintain code reliability across platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Matlab Developer, you need strong proficiency in Matlab programming, algorithm development, and a solid background in mathematics or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with toolboxes like Simulink, data analysis packages, and experience with version control systems such as Git are typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication enhance performance and collaboration within teams. These competencies are vital for efficiently developing, testing, and maintaining robust technical solutions in research and engineering environments.

What is the difference between Matlab Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectMatlab DeveloperData Analyst
Required SkillsMatlab programming, algorithm development, numerical analysisData visualization, statistical analysis, SQL, Excel
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering firms, software developmentBusiness, finance, healthcare, marketing
Common CertificationsMatlab certifications, engineering degreesCertified Analytics Professional, SQL certifications

Matlab Developers focus on developing algorithms and simulations using Matlab, often in engineering or research settings. Data Analysts interpret data to inform business decisions, utilizing tools like Excel and SQL. While both roles require analytical skills, Matlab Developers specialize in technical programming, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

Is MATLAB an in demand skill?

MATLAB is a valuable skill for roles such as MATLAB developers, especially in engineering, data analysis, and research fields. Its demand remains steady in industries like aerospace, automotive, and academia, where technical computing and simulation are essential. Proficiency in MATLAB, along with related skills like algorithm development, can enhance job prospects in these sectors.

Job description

SPACEWORKS

At SpaceWorks Enterprises, we specialize in next-generation high-speed flight systems, humanand robotic spacecraft, as well as entry, descent & landing technologies. Our core competencies include conducting preliminary design of aerospace concepts, performing detailed multidisciplinary engineering analysis, developing commercial aerospace software, prototyping spacecraft hardware components, and conducting market and economic research within the aerospace industry. We serve clients from the Department of Defense, NASA, and the commercial space sector.

THE ROLE

SpaceWorks is seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer on a temporary basis to support our Aerosciences and Structures team. Open to remote work, with preference in GA, NC, TN, IL, LA, MD, AL, or TX.

A successful candidate will:

  • Have intuition and experience modeling and/or simulating thermal response of supersonic/hypersonic aircraft and/or spacecraft.
  • Able to work well as part of a small multidisciplinary team of technical staff to design complex systems and contribute to existing code bases.
  • Exhibit a "can do" and "want to" attitude - bringing an open-minded approach and a bias toward finding solutions.
  • Have experience supporting activities in modeling, simulation, analysis and design of high-speed flight systems including exo-atmospheric, endo-atmospheric, re-entry, and launch systems.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Support thethermal design and analysis
  • Analyze launch vehicle thermal environments and component-level performance in support of design functions
  • Predict thermal loads, heat rates, surface temperatures on hypersonic flight vehicle (both internal and external)
  • Train others on thermal analysis in Thermal Desktop

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's, Master'sor Doctorate degree in Aerospace Engineering
  • 5+ years of related aerospace industry experiencecontributing
  • Must have a strong first principles understanding of radiative, convective, and conductive heat transfer
  • Basic understanding of launch vehicle, missile, and/or aircraft thermal management and design including radiative, conductive, and ablative materials and their heat shield applications
  • Proficiency in thermal modeling using thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, FIAT, ANSYS, SINDA/FLUINT, Sentry, COMSOL, etc.
  • Proficiency in computer aided design tools such as Solid Works, Unigraphics NX, CATIA, PTC Creo, and/or Solid Edge
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Relevant work or project experience in the design/modeling of hypersonic atmospheric vehicles, Earth-to-orbit launch systems, or human & robotic spacecraft
  • Experience in multidisciplinary design optimization in Matlab, Python, and/or Julia
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, collaborative environment with ownership and autonomy typical of a small business
  • Must be a U.S. citizenand be immediately eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
