What Do Mathematicians Do?

Mathematicians are employed in academia, government, and the private sector to solve problems using mathematical formulas. They work on teams with engineers, scientists, and other math professionals. Mathematicians conduct research to develop and understand mathematical principles and create models to solve practical problems in fields such as business, government, engineering, and the sciences. Mathematicians analyze data and apply mathematical techniques to help solve real-world problems. They recognize previously unknown relationships between known mathematical principles. Mathematicians may develop computational methods and computer codes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mathematician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mathematician, you need advanced mathematical knowledge, strong analytical reasoning, and typically at least a bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with mathematical software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, or programming languages like Python is often required, along with experience in statistical analysis tools. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help convey complex concepts clearly. These abilities are crucial for developing innovative solutions, conducting thorough research, and collaborating effectively in academic, industrial, or governmental environments.

How do mathematicians typically collaborate with professionals in other fields, such as engineering or data science?

Mathematicians often work closely with experts from various disciplines to solve complex real-world problems. For example, they may partner with engineers to develop optimized algorithms or with data scientists to create statistical models. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings, sharing research findings, and jointly developing solutions that integrate mathematical theory with practical applications. These interdisciplinary projects can broaden your perspective and enhance your communication and teamwork skills, making the role both challenging and rewarding.

What does a mathematician do?

A mathematician researches, analyzes, and applies mathematical principles to solve problems in science, engineering, business, and other fields. They may work in academia, industry, or government, developing new theories, creating models, and interpreting data. Mathematicians often use advanced mathematical techniques and computer technology to explore patterns, test hypotheses, and provide solutions to practical or abstract problems.

What is the difference between Mathematician vs Data Analyst?

AspectMathematicianData Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mathematics or related field; advanced degrees often preferredBachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or related field; certifications like CAP or Microsoft Certified Data Analyst are common
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, government agencies, private sector R&DBusiness offices, tech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Employer & Industry UsageAcademia, government, research institutions, tech companiesCorporate, finance, marketing, healthcare, technology

While both roles involve working with data and quantitative analysis, mathematicians focus more on theoretical research and developing new mathematical models, often in academic or research settings. Data analysts primarily interpret existing data to help organizations make informed decisions, working in business environments. Understanding these differences can help you choose the career path that aligns with your skills and interests.

Job description

Qualified Sr. Mathematician candidates must have experience in:
  • Creating slot machine math models and familiarity with math tools to run math simulators.
  • 5+ years of C# or C++ software development (3+ year in a lead position in the gaming industry for class III and class II (preferred) games)

Ideal candidates will have experience with:
  • Working within game designers to brainstorm new game ideas.
  • Creatively balancing the games to provide good gameplay experiences, to create profitable and successful slots and to analyze statistically, categorize and verify the maths.
  • Representing the mathematical creation and output to various testing labs.
  • Researching successful slot games, features and balances.
  • Draw from a wealth of knowledge in balancing previous slot machines, set out a desired profile tailored to a target market and the given features of the slot machine.
  • Adjust and redefine the desired profile based upon sampling the play experience and on review of the statistical analysis of the game and in comparing the game to known successful titles.
  • Create spreadsheets in Excel and assist C# developers in writing code to model slot machines mathematically.
  • Maintain spreadsheets and statistical logs and facilitate easy access.
  • Investigate ways of making spreadsheets and math tools to be more efficient.
  • To statistically analyze, log and compare the balances of games using our math tools to better understand what makes a successful math profile for different player profile types.
  • To statistically analyze the mathematical profiles of our competitors.
  • Introduce new statistical methods for the creation or verification of mathematical models.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics/Statistics or a related field; clear understanding of statistics and probability is a MUST.
