How to get a job in mathematical modeling?
The qualifications that you need to start working in mathematical modeling include a degree and experience using computer software and programming languages. You can start in this field by earning a bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, or computer science. Some employers accept applicants who have previous experience and relevant computation skills. If your duties involve computer programming, you need to know languages like Python or C++. Research positions often require a master’s degree or Ph.D. If your responsibilities include data analysis, you can pursue a graduate degree in data science, machine learning, or a similar subject.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mathematical modeler, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals in mathematical modeling roles, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Mathematical Modeling vs Data Analyst?
| Aspect | Mathematical Modeling | Data Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Degree in Mathematics, Applied Math, or related fields | Degree in Statistics, Data Science, or related fields |
| Work Environment | Research labs, engineering firms, academia | Business, finance, marketing departments |
| Industry Usage | Developing models to simulate systems or processes | Analyzing data to inform business decisions |
Mathematical Modeling focuses on creating mathematical representations of real-world systems, often for simulation or prediction. Data Analysts interpret and analyze data sets to support decision-making. While both roles require strong quantitative skills and familiarity with statistical tools, Mathematical Modelers emphasize developing models, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

As a Senior Optimization Engineer at Hitachi Energy, you will help develop the software and mathematical models that support real-time and market-based choices across the power system. In this role, you will work at the intersection of power systems, electricity markets, optimization, and software development-designing, building, testing, integrating, and documenting applications that help utilities and market operators run markets efficiently and support reliable grid operations.
You will translate customer requirements into technically sound solutions, apply advanced mathematical modeling and numerical methods, and support software releases while addressing complex technical issues. Your work will contribute to the reliability, performance, and modernization of the grid by enabling smarter market operation, better use of system resources, and stronger alignment with the evolving energy landscape. You will also collaborate with internal teams and customers on projects that connect technical depth with practical results, giving you the opportunity to grow your expertise in power market applications, optimization tools, and energy software in a global environment.
How You'll Make an Impact- Analyze customer requirements and propose technically sound solutions for power system and electricity market applications.
- Design, develop, and test optimization applications that support power systems and market operations.
- Integrate software solutions and prepare documentation in line with established development practices.
- Support software releases and troubleshoot complex technical issues to help maintain solution performance and customer outcomes.
- Research and apply advanced mathematical modeling and numerical methods to improve application capability.
- Collaborate with internal teams and represent Hitachi Energy in customer meetings.
- Contribute to improving software development processes and technical documentation.
- Travel occasionally to support global customer projects.
- Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
- Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in Canada.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in electricity markets.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in optimization modeling tools and solvers (AMPL/AIMMS, CPLEX, Gurobi).
- Minimum 3 years of experience with high-level programming languages.
- Minimum 3 years of experience using Linux or AIX operating systems.
- Minimum 2 years developing power system application software for electricity markets.
- Sound written and oral communication skills in English.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to build your skills while working with experienced teams on technologies and software solutions that support the future of energy.
- Opportunities to work on innovative technologies that help shape the future of energy
- A collaborative environment with experienced professionals across the power industry
- Access to learning platforms, tuition reimbursement, and career development programs
- Attractive health and retirement-related benefits
- Paid leave and flexible work arrangements that support work-life balance
