WORK LOCATION: Grand Rapids - Lettinga Campus
DEPARTMENT: Academic-College of Urban Ed
SPECIFIC COURSE INFORMATION: Davenport University is seeking an Adjunct Faculty member to teach undergraduate Teacher Education courses delivered through our flexible format, which includes an in-seat component at our Lettinga campus.
Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach one or more of the following courses, including Literacy Methods, Health and Physical Education, Social Studies Methods, STEM Curriculum Design and Methods, and Mathematics Methods.
SUMMARY:
Adjunct Faculty bring practical experience to the classroom and transfer their knowledge to students by establishing and promoting an effective learning environment for students with diverse interests, abilities, needs, and expectations in the area of teacher preparation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Global experience in teacher preparation or teacher development.
  2. Demonstrated general knowledge in teaching disciplines related to math, science, reading, and literacy, preferably in an urban environment.
  3. Teaches courses as contracted each semester.
  4. Attend and be prepared for scheduled class sessions. Provide instructional opportunities for entire scheduled class time.
  5. Contribute positively to the advancement of academics through:
  • Understanding the Davenport University curriculum;
  • Preparing instructional course syllabi and materials; and
  • May provide input and feedback on selected textbooks and instructional resource and electronic materials.
  1. Conduct classes in accordance with established course outlines and approved instructional materials.
  2. Guide students in their educational processes by referring them for assistance regarding their program/schedules, academic progress, specialized services within the University, and up-to-date information about educational/occupational opportunities.
  3. Be accessible to assist students with questions and in the completion of assignments as delineated in the course syllabus.
  4. Access information on current issues through University communications (i.e., e-mail and print correspondence, website, and publications).
  5. Maintain all records-student/classroom/department (i.e., grades, attendance, etc.) - in compliance with the University Instructional Policies and Procedures Manual.
  6. Maintain and demonstrate a positive approach that provides for innovation and personal growth
  7. Maintain and demonstrate a Business/Professional environment.
  8. Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies. This includes NCAA, GLIAC and national affiliations associated with athletics or other role specific regulations.
  9. Maintain and demonstrate a high level of professional ethics.
  10. Participate in adjunct faculty evaluation process as determined by the University.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Master's degree in Education or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) current professional years of experience related to assigned teaching discipline
  • Ability to teach one (1) to four (4) hours per class session
  • Enjoy working with the public and be able to relate well with diverse students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrate a professional manner and attire
  • Demonstrate effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication behaviors
  • Demonstrated effective knowledge and use of presentation, facilitation, and technology skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, analyze data, and read/process written information
  • Teaching experience (preferably in higher education or training) and experience in planning/developing courses preferred
  • Prolonged sitting and standing
  • Use of personal computer and telephone (eye and hand strain)
  • Ability to lift classroom materials, etc. up to twenty-five (25 pounds)
