What is a math software engineer?

Math Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize software that performs complex mathematical computations. They often work on algorithms, numerical analysis, and simulation tools used in scientific research, finance, engineering, or data analysis. Their work ensures that mathematical models and computations are both accurate and efficient within various applications. Math Software Engineers typically have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.

How do math software engineers typically collaborate with other teams during the development process?

Math Software Engineers often work closely with cross-functional teams, such as data scientists, product managers, and front-end developers, to ensure mathematical models and algorithms are accurately implemented in software products. Collaboration involves regular meetings to discuss requirements, problem-solving sessions to address computational challenges, and code reviews for maintaining mathematical integrity. Communicating complex mathematical concepts in an accessible way is a key part of the role, enabling teams to create robust and efficient solutions that meet user needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Software Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm development, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, along with experience using mathematical libraries and tools like NumPy or SciPy, is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are valuable soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills ensure the development of robust, efficient, and accurate mathematical software solutions that meet complex computational requirements.

What is the difference between Math Software Engineer vs Data Scientist?

Job description

About Akunaย

Akuna Capital is an innovative trading firm with a strong focus on collaboration,ย cutting-edgeย technology, data-driven solutions, and automation. We specialize in providing liquidity on a variety of exchangesย across various asset classes, primarily asย an options market maker. To do this successfully, weย buildย andย maintainย our own low-latency technologies, including application frameworks, trading strategies, and mathematical models.ย

Our Founding Partners first conceptualized Akuna in their hometown of Sydney, Australia. They opened the firm's first office in 2011 in the heart of the derivatives industry and the options capital of the world - Chicago. Today, Akuna is proud toย operateย fromย additionalย offices around the world:ย Sydney, Shanghai, Singapore, and London.ย

Whatย you'llย do as aย C++ย Software Engineer Intern at Akuna:ย ย

C++ software engineerย interns at Akunaย have the opportunity toย work on a variety of high-performance systems that power the firm's core business operations.ย Ourย interns areย embeddedย on small-to-medium-sized teams thatย frequentlyย interface with Quant and Trading, allowing them toย focus onย a specific domain area whileย still experiencing the day-to-day life of an Akuna software engineer. Akuna's C++ systems are heavily multithreaded, asynchronous, and distributed by nature, which comes with a slew of challenges; our engineers are tasked with ensuring these systems are reliable, efficient, scalable, and flexible enough for even the most niche use cases.ย

Over their 10-week Akunacademy experience, software engineer interns will work on one or more valuable projects, progressing from ideation and design all the way to delivery and maintenance. These projects range from adding functionality onto existing systems to implementing brand new componentry to experimenting with new technologies and patterns to better understand the solution space. Akuna is looking for software engineer interns who are motivated, can solve complex problems, and are willing to reach for creative solutions when faced with novel problems. We value innovation, hard work, and knowledge, and we want our engineer interns to make a direct impact on the firm. Whether you are interested in algorithms and data structures, concurrency, networking and protocols, performance tuning, data capture and analysis, mathematical modeling, hardware, or something else, there's engaging work to be done.ย

Requirementsย for This Roleย

  • Pursuing a bachelor's,ย master's, orย Ph.D. in a technical field (computer science/engineering, math,ย physics, or equivalent)ย
  • Graduatingย byย August 2028ย
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. as of the first day of employment, including F-1 students using OPT or STEMย

Previousย experience in finance or trading isย notย required.ย Many of ourย engineersย joinedย Akuna with little-to-noย priorย knowledgeย of the markets, and we pride ourselves on our ability to onboard those new to the industry. Training and continuous education are provided for all engineers to ensure they can buildย the requisite technical and non-technical skillset for success.ย

Qualities That Make a Great C++ Software Engineer Candidateย

  • Experience programming in modern C++ (C++20ย or later;ย C++23ย preferred)ย
  • Experience with several of the followingย
    • Distributed systemsย
    • Parallel processingย
    • Asynchronousย architecturesย
    • Networking or protocol encoding/decodingย
    • Lock-free data structures andย algorithmsย
    • Performance profiling (e.g.ย perf,ย gprof,ย vtune)ย
    • Scripting, such as in Python orย shellย
  • Familiarity with standard debugging toolsย (e.g.ย GDB,ย Valgrind, address sanitizer)ย
  • The ability to effectively communicate with non-technical stakeholders in Quant and Trading to obtain requirements, workshop solutions, and implement agreed-upon roadmapsย
  • The ability to react quickly and effectively to rapidly changing market conditions, including the ability to quickly and accurately respond and/or solve math and coding problems, is an essential function of the roleย
  • A passion forย buildingย complexย systems from the ground upย
  • The ability to collaborate with other developers ofย different backgrounds, specialties, and knowledge levels to collectively deliverย cohesive solutions to non-trivial problemsย
  • An intrinsically motivated attitude and the ability to work independentlyย
  • A strong senseย of ownership, including a drive to fix bugs when they inevitably ariseย

In addition to the above technical skills, Akunaย values diversity of experience and perspective. We believe thatย engineers withย varied backgrounds and interests allowย us toย approach problems fromย uniqueย anglesย andย toย uncover innovative,ย optimalย solutions.ย We want everyone to feel empowered to apply; we welcome your application, and we strongly encourage you to take the first steps in joining usย in the future!ย

Resumesย mustย beย submittedย in PDF format.ย

By applying to this role, you areย indicatingย this is your top preference and acknowledge you will not be considered for other Quant and/or Tech roles at Akuna this recruiting season. This acknowledgement does not limit applications to Trading roles - in addition to this role, you may apply to any Trader roles of interest.

We are an AI-friendly company and encourage employees to leverage AI in their daily work. However, AI assistance is not permitted during interviews or assessments. Our interview process is designed to evaluate your individual skills and judgment, and the use of AI tools will result in disqualification from the hiring process.
