What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Math Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Software Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm development, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, along with experience using mathematical libraries and tools like NumPy or SciPy, is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are valuable soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills ensure the development of robust, efficient, and accurate mathematical software solutions that meet complex computational requirements.

How do Math Software Engineers typically collaborate with other teams during the development process?

Math Software Engineers often work closely with cross-functional teams, such as data scientists, product managers, and front-end developers, to ensure mathematical models and algorithms are accurately implemented in software products. Collaboration involves regular meetings to discuss requirements, problem-solving sessions to address computational challenges, and code reviews for maintaining mathematical integrity. Communicating complex mathematical concepts in an accessible way is a key part of the role, enabling teams to create robust and efficient solutions that meet user needs.

What are Math Software Engineers?

Math Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize software that performs complex mathematical computations. They often work on algorithms, numerical analysis, and simulation tools used in scientific research, finance, engineering, or data analysis. Their work ensures that mathematical models and computations are both accurate and efficient within various applications. Math Software Engineers typically have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.

What is the difference between Math Software Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectMath Software EngineerData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fieldsBachelor's or higher in Statistics, Data Science, or related fields
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, R&D labs, tech companiesData analysis teams, research departments, tech firms
Industry UsageDeveloping algorithms, modeling, simulationData analysis, predictive modeling, insights generation

Math Software Engineers focus on developing mathematical algorithms and software solutions, often working on simulations and modeling. Data Scientists analyze data to extract insights and build predictive models. While both roles require strong math skills, Math Software Engineers are more involved in software development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and interpretation.

Job description

The Team

The Avatar Team is at the heart of the Roblox experience. The Roblox Avatar defines the identity of every player and is a core pillar of the metaverse. Within this group, the Avatar Heads and Bodies team ensures that these foundational avatar components are high-quality, performant, and reliable at scale. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our User-Generated Content (UGC) Validation engineering initiatives. This role focuses on advancing our existing automation and validation systems to ensure that the rapidly growing ecosystem of 3D marketplace content meets our platform standards.

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer for UGC Validation, you will focus on scaling and evolving our automated systems to validate 3D assets uploaded directly to the Roblox marketplace. Your primary responsibility will be to develop engineering solutions that quantitatively enforce our marketplace policies.

Rather than building systems from scratch, you will expand upon our established validation frameworks to detect avatar schema compliance, flag geometry-based exploits, and programmatically measure asset quality. In this role, you will serve as a core practical resource for geometric processing, helping our broader engineering and machine learning initiatives build highly precise automated setup tools.

You Will:
  • Scale and Extend Automated Validation: Maintain, optimize, and expand our existing engineering systems to analyze 3D geometry, avatar schema compliance, rigging structures, and asset metadata.
  • Enforce Marketplace Policy: Develop and refine quantitative, programmatic metrics to evaluate incoming UGC assets against platform quality standards and security rules before they reach hundreds of millions of users.
  • Geometric Processing Resource: Serve as a practical engineering resource for geometric processing, collaborating closely with machine learning teams to enhance asset quality pipelines.
  • Cross-Functional Execution: Work across the avatar stack, collaborating with engineers, product owners, and artists to translate complex marketplace policy requirements into clean, scalable code updates.
  • Optimize Existing Pipelines: Enhance sophisticated data and validation pipelines capable of handling large-scale 3D assets like meshes and textures with high runtime efficiency.
You Have:
  • Education: A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field, or relevant work experience.
  • Expert 3D Math Foundation: Exceptional spatial reasoning and a deep mastery of 3D math, specifically linear algebra tailored for game engines and 3D environments.
  • Geometric Processing Expertise: Strong experience manipulating and analyzing 3D data, including meshes, vertices, and topology.
  • Schema & Avatar Knowledge: Solid understanding of avatar schema compliance, rigging, skinning weights, and animation principles.
  • Software Engineering Excellence: Strong programming skills in C++, Luau, Python (or similar production languages) with a proven track record in system optimization, data pipelining, and complex software design.
  • Nice-to-Haves:
    • Hands-on experience with runtime game engines.
    • Foundational knowledge of rendering pipelines.
You Are:
  • A Proven Problem Solver: You enjoy solving ambiguous, complex technical challenges and have a history of delivering production-ready engineering updates.
  • A Collaborative Teammate: You thrive in cross-functional environments, bridging programmatic geometry constraints with artist and platform needs.
  • Mission-Driven: You are passionate about building a safe, high-quality, and civil marketplace ecosystem for a global community.
