How much do math research jobs pay per year?
What is a math research?
A Math Research job involves studying mathematical theories, solving complex problems, and developing new mathematical models. Researchers may work in academia, government, or industry, applying advanced math to fields like physics, finance, cryptography, or data science. They often publish papers, collaborate with other scientists, and contribute to theoretical or applied mathematics.
What types of projects do professionals in math research typically work on?
Math Research professionals often focus on solving theoretical problems, developing new mathematical models, or applying mathematics to fields like data science, engineering, or finance. Projects can range from pure mathematical theory to practical applications such as optimizing algorithms, analyzing big data, or designing statistical tests. Researchers frequently work within academic, governmental, or private sector teams, collaborating with other scientists, engineers, or subject matter experts. This interdisciplinary approach allows for both independent and group work, providing opportunities for creative problem-solving and continuous learning.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in math research, and why are they important?
To thrive in Math Research, you need advanced mathematical knowledge, strong analytical abilities, and a graduate degree (often a Ph.D.) in mathematics or a related field. Commonly used tools include programming languages such as Python or MATLAB, mathematical modeling software, and statistical analysis packages. Exceptional problem-solving, perseverance, and effective communication skills help researchers articulate complex findings and collaborate across disciplines. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative research that advances understanding and delivers real-world impact.

See Proof of Eligibility for an extensive list of document requirements for all employment authorities.
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document.
Basic Requirements:
Degree: Bachelor's degree or higher degree in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.
AND
Experience Required:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Specialized Experience: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled including: Conducting analytical studies to support management decision making; Applying operational research and system analysis principles and methods to daily work assignments; Evaluating information concerning organizational effectiveness and systems analysis; Preparing reports and analytical studies contributing to implementing and transitioning of a wide-range of military concepts and visions; Developing custom analysis tools in a variety of programming languages and applications (i.e. Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SQL, etc.). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
OR
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-12 (Research Position): Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-12: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education in excess of 36 hours (total semester hours minus 36) by 18.
