Job description

Join a group of passionate advocates on our mission to improve the lives of youth!  Rite of Passage Team is hiring for a High School Math Teacher at DePaul Academy Residential Facility in South Bend Indiana 

DePaul Academy, located in the heart of South Bend, Indiana, shares a campus with the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center.  DePaul serves young men aged 14-18 who have mental health, substance abuse and/or behavioral needs.  Utilizing a strengths-based approach, DePaul provides its youth with access to therapeutic services and diverse social and educational opportunities.  Through a blend of evidence-based treatment, academic and extracurricular opportunities, young men are provided a normalized setting that foster a culture of learning, growth, and achievement.

Pay: Based on degree and teaching experience.  Earn a $1,000 Bonus After Successful Completion of Essential Skills Training (within the first 90 Days!)

What you will do: In this role, you will be primarily responsible for implementing and adhering to the principles of Positive Operational Culture and providing instructional services to students.  You will work collaboratively with staff in a supportive fashion emphasizing a positive attitude toward students, staff and program. 

To be considered, you should:     

  1. Possesses a current and valid Indiana Teaching License pertaining to the subjects (s) being taught.  Must also be licensed for grades 5-12 or 9-12 in subject matter to be taught.  Will work with those who has just graduated on obtaining Emergency permit.
  2. Knowledge of Instructional strategies and how they can be employed to deliver curriculum and assess student learning.  An understanding of various methodologies and research related to learning and working with at-risk, high school aged youth.  Effective classroom management techniques and behavioral management styles that result in understanding of how to manage and teach to various learning styles.  Effective communication techniques that enable positive and productive collaboration with site staff.  An understanding of technology and how it can be used as an educational tool.
  3. Ability to: Establish a teaching rapport with students which results in student achievement in all program areas.  Diagnose, prescribe and evaluate student progress on an ongoing basis.  Collaborate with staff to deliver a consistent curriculum and implement a team approach to working with students.  Confront inappropriate behavior appropriately and take the necessary action as outlined in the program procedures.  Accept additional tasks as assigned including flexible work schedule and extracurricular assignments.
