Math Research information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in math research, and why are they important?
To thrive in Math Research, you need advanced mathematical knowledge, strong analytical abilities, and a graduate degree (often a Ph.D.) in mathematics or a related field. Commonly used tools include programming languages such as Python or MATLAB, mathematical modeling software, and statistical analysis packages. Exceptional problem-solving, perseverance, and effective communication skills help researchers articulate complex findings and collaborate across disciplines. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative research that advances understanding and delivers real-world impact.
What types of projects do professionals in math research typically work on?
Math Research professionals often focus on solving theoretical problems, developing new mathematical models, or applying mathematics to fields like data science, engineering, or finance. Projects can range from pure mathematical theory to practical applications such as optimizing algorithms, analyzing big data, or designing statistical tests. Researchers frequently work within academic, governmental, or private sector teams, collaborating with other scientists, engineers, or subject matter experts. This interdisciplinary approach allows for both independent and group work, providing opportunities for creative problem-solving and continuous learning.

Job description
La Scuola International School is the only Reggio Emilia inspired, International Baccalaureate (Early, Primary and Middle Years) and Italian Language Immersion school in the world. Teachers are researchers and are supported with robust Professional Development opportunities throughout the year.
Learning is a part of everything that we do, not just what happens in the classroom. While our school experience is rooted in highly regarded curricula, the magic of La Scuola is more than what we teach. It is how we teach and learn, which is truly a way of living, thinking, and interacting with the world. To learn more, please visit us at www.lascuolasf.org.
Founded: 2002
Number of students: 465
Locations: San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Milano, Italy
La Scuola International School is an independent non-profit school accredited by NAIS, CAIS, WASC and CIS and is one of two Italian schools recognized by the Italian government in the United States.
La Scuola's math program commits to providing students with a creative and positive experience that fosters a sense of joy and confidence about the subject of mathematics. Our math program values mathematical reasoning, exploring multiple strategies to model and solve authentic problems, investigating both real-world and computational mathematical contexts, and is often hands-on and integrated across disciplines.
La Scuola seeks a dynamic math specialist who is passionate about exploring mathematics with elementary and middle school students, excited by the opportunity to inspire all learners through innovation, and knowledgeable about cutting edge mathematics pedagogy and technology integration.
The math specialist will work with small groups of elementary and middle school children to support and enhance their math skills and conceptual understandings, collaborating with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Elementary & Middle School Division Heads, K-8 Learning Specialists and Teachers to ensure student learning and academic success.
This part time position (50%) reports dually to both the Director of Student Support & Counseling and Division Head.
Primary Areas of Responsibility
Instruction & Curriculum
- Support the development and implementation of inquiry-based, conceptually rich mathematics curriculum aligned with IB standards to complement and fulfill program requirements.
- Teach small-group and, as needed, whole-class math instruction in mixed-age and mixed-ability classes across grades K-8.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate mathematics into interdisciplinary, theme-based units.
- Design learning experiences that are hands-on, problem-based, and reflective of current best practices in mathematics pedagogy.
- Support teachers in identifying resources and strategies for inquiry based mathematical learning. Deliver model lessons, observe teachers, and meet to provide feedback and collaborate on developing ideas.
- Use technology thoughtfully to enhance conceptual understanding and engagement.
Student Support & Intervention
- In collaboration with teachers, support and conduct the implementation of diagnostic and benchmark assessments to identify student strengths and barriers to learning.
- Design and implement research-based math interventions based on assessment results for individuals and small groups.
- Differentiate instruction, learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment based on assessment data to support a range of learners,
- Monitor student progress and support teachers by communicating growth through written narratives and conferences.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Partner with classroom teachers, learning specialists, and administrators to ensure coordinated student support.
- Participate in student support meetings, weekly faculty meetings, and other meetings as needed, including professional learning activities.
- Support semester math narratives and participate in parent-teacher conferences as needed.
- Present at Back-to-School Night and other community events.
- Serve as an advisor/mentor for PYP Exhibition or Middle School advisory, as appropriate.
Required
- Bachelor's degree required in mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, or a related field; advanced degree strongly preferred.
- Minimum of three years of elementary math teaching, preferably in an independent or IB school setting.
- Experience designing and implementing inquiry-based, constructivist, or project-based mathematics curriculum.
- Strong understanding of mathematics pedagogy, assessment practices, and differentiation strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to support diverse learners in mixed-age and mixed-ability settings.
- Well-versed in educational technology and current trends in mathematics education.
- Passionate about sharing mathematics with students and colleagues.
Desired Competencies
- Strong relational skills with students, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to remain calm, grounded, and reflective during moments of student dysregulation.
- Collaborative, flexible, and solution-oriented mindset.
- Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
- Commitment to inclusion, equity, and whole-child development.
Start date: August 1, 2026
Salary: $40,000 - $45,000 annual salary for this part time (50%) role based on qualifications and experience
