What is a math interventionist?

Math interventionists are educators who specialize in helping students who struggle with mathematics. They work with individuals or small groups to provide targeted instruction, support, and strategies to improve students' understanding and performance in math. Math interventionists often collaborate with classroom teachers to identify students' needs, assess progress, and tailor interventions to address specific learning gaps. Their goal is to help students build confidence and achieve grade-level math proficiency.

How does a math interventionist typically collaborate with classroom teachers to support student progress?

A Math Interventionist works closely with classroom teachers to identify students who need additional math support, often by analyzing assessment data and monitoring classroom performance. Regular collaboration includes co-planning targeted lessons, sharing strategies for differentiation, and providing feedback on student progress. The interventionist may also participate in team meetings and professional development to ensure alignment with curriculum goals, fostering a cohesive approach to help students build foundational math skills. This partnership ensures that interventions are seamlessly integrated into the broader instructional program and tailored to each student's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math interventionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Interventionist, you need a strong background in mathematics education, instructional strategies, and typically a teaching certification or relevant degree. Familiarity with assessment tools, intervention programs, and student data management systems is important for tracking progress and tailoring instruction. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to build rapport with students are crucial soft skills for motivating learners and addressing diverse needs. These skills ensure effective support for struggling students, helping close achievement gaps and fostering long-term academic success.

What do you need to be a math interventionist?

To become a math interventionist, you typically need a bachelor's degree in education, mathematics, or a related field, along with teaching certification or licensure. Some positions may require specialized training in reading or math intervention strategies and experience working with students who have learning difficulties.

Job Description

La Scuola’s math program commits to providing students with a creative and positive experience that fosters a sense of joy and confidence about the subject of mathematics. Our math program values mathematical reasoning, exploring multiple strategies to model and solve authentic problems, investigating both real-world and computational mathematical contexts, and is often hands-on and integrated across disciplines.

La Scuola seeks a dynamic math specialist who is passionate about exploring mathematics with elementary and middle school students, excited by the opportunity to inspire all learners through innovation, and knowledgeable about cutting edge mathematics pedagogy and technology integration.

The math specialist will work with small groups of elementary and middle school children to support and enhance their math skills and conceptual understandings, collaborating with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Elementary & Middle School Division Heads, K-8 Learning Specialists and Teachers to ensure student learning and academic success.

This part time position (50%) reports dually to both the Director of Student Support & Counseling and Division Head.

  • Support teachers in identifying resources and strategies for inquiry based mathematical learning. Deliver model lessons, observe teachers, and meet to provide feedback and collaborate on developing ideas.
  • Use technology thoughtfully to enhance conceptual understanding and engagement.

Student Support & Intervention

  • In collaboration with teachers, support and conduct the implementation of diagnostic and benchmark assessments to identify student strengths and barriers to learning.
  • Design and implement research-based math interventions based on assessment results for individuals and small groups.
  • Differentiate instruction, learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment based on assessment data to support a range of learners,
  • Monitor student progress and support teachers by communicating growth through written narratives and conferences.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Partner with classroom teachers, learning specialists, and administrators to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Participate in student support meetings, weekly faculty meetings, and other meetings as needed, including professional learning activities.
  • Support semester math narratives and participate in parent-teacher conferences as needed.
  • Present at Back-to-School Night and other community events.
  • Serve as an advisor/mentor for PYP Exhibition or Middle School advisory, as appropriate.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required in mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, or a related field; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of elementary math teaching, preferably in an independent or IB school setting.
  • Experience designing and implementing inquiry-based, constructivist, or project-based mathematics curriculum.
  • Strong understanding of mathematics pedagogy, assessment practices, and differentiation strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to support diverse learners in mixed-age and mixed-ability settings.
  • Well-versed in  educational technology and current trends in mathematics education.
  • Passionate about sharing mathematics with students and colleagues.

Desired Competencies

  • Strong relational skills with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to remain calm, grounded, and reflective during moments of student dysregulation.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and whole-child development.
