Job description

Description

The Mathnasium Instructor is responsible for delivering mathematical instruction to students using the Mathnasium method. The Instructor is committed to providing exceptional customer service through an expert approach that attends to each individual student's needs. The Instructor builds students' confidence and self-esteem through successful encounters and interactions with carefully selected materials. The Instructor works as part of a team and operates in a team teaching environment where collaboration and communication ensure all student needs are addressed. The instructor position is managed by the Center Director. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Math Expert: Instructors must be passionate about math and have strong skills through Algebra I. Instructors who work with high school students must also excel in higher level math including Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Calculus. Instructors must be willing to successfully complete training and apply new skills to teach the mathnasium way.
  • Engaging: Instructors must interact well with students. Instructors should be able to inspire students to do well, establish a fun learning environment and consistently demonstrate enthusiasm in teaching math. Instructors should be able to build strong relationships with students in order to keep them engaged in their work.
  • Facilitator: Instructors must move easily from one student to another and be able to keep track of multiple instructional lessons that happen concurrently. Instructors must be able to evaluate and document progress in order to facilitate student learning. Instructors must be able correct work and provide students constructive feedback using positive reinforcement techniques that bolster confidence with math.
  • Professional: Instructors must interact with parents, students, and co-workers in a friendly and professional manner at all times and establish a high level of confidence and program value with Mathnasium families. Instructors must be a role model for students, demonstrating the capabilities and competence that math can bring. 

AVAILABILITY

Must maintain at least three days a week availability for 3-4 hours shifts.  

TRAINING

Must complete 10 Mathnasium modules, accompanying assignments and 10 hours of instruction practice shifts within one month of being hired.  

SKILLS

  • Teach using Mathnasium methodology and terminology, using prescribed teaching practices
  • Actively encourage, motivate, and engage with students during the instructional session
  • Evaluate and document student progress
  • Correct student work and provide positive constructive feedback
  • Maintain student attention and redirect distracted students
  • Manage student behavior to create a positive environment that optimizes learning
  • Communicate student needs to center leadership and to instructional staff in a team-teaching environment
  • Assist in non-teaching tasks, which may include cleaning, administrative assistance, curriculum preparation, or other duties as assigned

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct yourself in a friendly, responsible and professional manner anytime you are representing Mathnasium
  • Be reliable by showing up on time and following through on your commitments
  • Maintain availability during hours of operation and periodically for special events and staff meetings
  • Maintain good availability
  • Continuously strive to become a great instructor
  • Demonstrate retention of information learned during training including staff meetings and any other staff development opportunities
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively utilize team teaching

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Use the Mathnasium teaching constructs  
  • Do not repeat an explanation if it is not working - try another approach
  • Do not force students to keep working on material they have already mastered
  • Fall back on prerequisite knowledge if a student is having trouble, extend knowledge when a student understands the concept
  • Praise, encourage and constructively criticize when appropriate
  • Use socratic questioning when appropriate and direct teaching when appropriate  
  • Use Mathnasium vocabulary because it makes sense, avoid confusing nomenclature, explain concisely. 
  • Takes opportunities to expand student's education through different mediums
  • Make students aware of their own thinking processes
  • Require students to use mental math.
  • Demonstrates mastery of teach and move on  
  • Utilize school work time effectively
  • Constructively manage student visit 
  • Facilitate appropriate student behavior

CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interact appropriately upon arrival
  • Monitor center environment to ensure student safety 
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively tell others about Mathnasium

HOUSEKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist students in maintaining properly organized binders
  • Maintain a clean, organized teaching area and thoroughly clean it at the end of each shift
  • Contribute to the overall upkeep of the center by completing the instructor checklist as required
