Position Description Summary
Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for a full-time faculty 12 month position in the Learning Lab as a Learning Lab Coordinator.
Under the supervision of the Director of Library and Academic Support Services, the Learning Lab Coordinator is responsible for the daily management, supervision, and oversight of the Learning Lab. The Coordinator works collaboratively and creatively with faculty, academic programs, student services, and others to identify and respond to students' learning needs, developing and delivering effective and accessible academic supports beyond the classroom to foster and improve academic success for all learners. This is a 12-month full-time faculty position with supervisory responsibilities.
Core Competencies and Qualifications
Educational and professional qualifications to be determined by the hiring manager, search committee, and HR, consistent with accreditation guidelines and standards - generally stated as:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with an emphasis on teaching and learning (including but not limited to Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Higher Education, or Educational Leadership) - OR - Master's degree in an academic discipline in which tutoring/learning assistance is typically provided beyond the classroom setting required.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed at least two years of full-time teaching (or the equivalent in part-time teaching experience) in higher education at a level comparable to a community college OR a minimum of two years of full-time work experience in a collegiate academic/learning support services setting (learning commons, tutoring center, library, writing center, math lab, etc.).
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience with best practices and innovative strategies for learning support, including but not limited to professional and peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, computer-assisted learning, online learning, peer mentoring, and/or student success coaching.
  • Candidates must demonstrate successful and effective supervisory and management skills, developing and leading a diverse team comprised of instructional, tutorial, administrative support, and student staff.
  • Candidates must demonstrate competence in creating, organizing, and delivering effective and appropriate learning experiences in both individual and group settings
  • Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the community college mission/philosophy, possessing the desire and ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and responsibly with colleagues, staff, and community college students in a diverse and multicultural setting.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to keeping professional skills and knowledge up-to-date.
The ideal candidate will have education and experience that reflect:
  • Administrative experience with learning centers and/or tutoring.
  • Experience with college research and planning, especially with evaluating student success data.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, including a high level of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in higher education.
  • Experience with developing and fostering professional development initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with administration, faculty, staff, and students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to
  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for the daily operations of the Learning Lab with an unwavering focus on addressing student needs and fostering academic success.
  • Supervise Learning Lab staff and student employees to ensure the promotion of a safe, welcoming, and positive learning environment centered on providing exceptional, responsive customer service to students and faculty.
  • Research, plan, and evaluate all tutoring systems using data-informed higher education best practices to facilitate ongoing service improvements.
  • Develop and deliver robust tutor training materials, onboarding documents, and continuous professional development seminars for all lab staff and student workers.
  • Administer standard college systems and procedures for recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and mentoring staff and student employees.
  • Manage department expenses, operate within the limits of an assigned budget, implement cost-effective efficiencies, and provide formal budget recommendations to the Director of Library and Academic Support Services.
  • Partner with schools, departments, programs, and other offices to improve and sustain the academic integrity of tutoring services while boosting institutional retention, course completion, persistence, graduation, and credit transfer rates.
  • Analyze and contextualize local lab data alongside national research organizations (e.g., ATD, NADE, CCRC) and state-wide research bodies (e.g., MCCA, MDEC) to drive program innovation.
  • Ensure a climate that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes respect for diversity and inclusiveness. Foster a positive working and learning environment by maintaining a climate of collaboration, fairness, cooperation, and professionalism.
  • Participate in college committees, including chairing the Learning Lab Advisory Committee.
  • Align department initiatives with strategic planning goals.
  • Promote and participate in professional development activities to foster the ongoing growth, advancement, and enrichment of the Learning Lab team, individual staff members, and oneself.
  • Perform other duties as qualified or trained to perform as assigned.
