Job description

The Middle School STEM and Math Teacher is responsible for fostering a collaborative learning environment to connect content to students’ innate inquisitiveness and critical thinking skills. Reporting to the Head of Middle School and in support of the content-area Department Chairs, the Middle School STEM and Math Teacher promotes high levels of learning in an engaging and effective manner using various teaching methods and curriculum resources for students in grades 5-8.  In coordination with the Director of STEM at Kinkaid, the Middle School STEM and Math Teacher will contribute to the STEM program's vision, develop and deliver the eighth-grade STEM course, teach Algebra I, and direct the after-school robotics club. 

The Middle School STEM and Math Teacher embraces and advances the principles set out in Kinkaid’s core documents: mission and core values, DEI commitment and strategic plan, Middle School Educational Philosophy, and the Portrait of a Teacher.

The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,500 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade) and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Kinkaid offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design and deliver eighth grade level curriculum for a trimester course that consists of  engaging and innovative lesson plans that cover the skill sets needed for exploration in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics 
  • Teach two sections of Algebra I in collaboration with the Algebra I teaching team.
  • Serve as an advisor to Middle School students and commit to duties required in supervising students in grades 5-8 by following Kinkaid’s established student wellbeing curriculum
  • Foster a dynamic learning environment that encourages student creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving
  • Utilize a mix of instructional strategies and resources to promote understanding for students with diverse learning styles
  • Assess and track student progress, provide feedback, and adapt lesson plans 
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and families to support student learning and well-being
  • Encourage and support students in STEM competitions, projects,  and events outside the school day
  • Keep up to date with developments in STEM education and incorporate these into teaching practice
  • Directing and modeling best practices in established school safety and disciplinary rules
  • Availability to participate in after-school activities, including clubs and sporting events
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a relevant STEM field (Masters degree preferred)
  • Proven experience teaching in a middle school environment
  • Advanced knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about fostering a love for STEM within students
  • Maintain integrity to the mission of the school and the MS Educational Philosophy
