What is a maternity care assistant?

Maternity Care Assistants (MCAs) are healthcare professionals who support midwives and nurses in caring for women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Their duties often include helping with personal care, monitoring vital signs, providing emotional support, and assisting with feeding and baby care. MCAs play an important role in ensuring the comfort and wellbeing of mothers and newborns in hospitals, clinics, or community settings. They typically work under the supervision of qualified midwives or nurses.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a maternity care assistant, and how do they collaborate with midwives and nurses?

Maternity Care Assistants typically support midwives and nurses in providing care to expectant and new mothers, as well as their babies. Daily tasks often include assisting with personal care, monitoring vital signs, helping with breastfeeding support, and preparing rooms for deliveries. Collaboration is key, as Maternity Care Assistants often act as a bridge between patients and clinical staff, ensuring comfort and safety for mothers and infants.
