What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Material Science Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Material Science Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering principles, typically supported by at least a bachelor's degree in material science or a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools like scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and materials modeling software is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the development, testing, and improvement of materials that meet industry performance and safety standards.

What are some common challenges material science engineers face when working on interdisciplinary projects?

Material science engineers often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering, which can present challenges in aligning project goals and communication styles. Navigating differences in technical language and priorities requires adaptability and strong teamwork skills. Additionally, integrating new materials into existing manufacturing processes may involve troubleshooting unforeseen issues, making flexibility and creative problem-solving essential. These challenges ultimately foster valuable cross-disciplinary experience and can lead to innovative solutions.

What is material science engineering?

Material science engineering is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the discovery, design, and development of new materials and the improvement of existing ones. Engineers in this field study the structure, properties, and performance of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Their work is essential for advancing technology in industries like aerospace, electronics, automotive, and healthcare. Material science engineers play a critical role in creating materials with enhanced strength, durability, or other specialized properties to meet the needs of modern applications.

Job description

Andromeda Systems Incorporated (ASI) is seeking a Journeyman Materials Engineer to support the Materials Protection Team (MPT) at NAS Jacksonvilles Materials Engineering Laboratory. This role is critical to supporting various military aircraft depot overhaul programs by applying materials and process engineering principles to our core areas of expertise: inorganic coatings, cleaning, organic coatings, corrosion, wear, preservation, and additive manufacturing, specifically cold spray.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide materials engineering support for production processes including electroplating, surface finishing, cleaning, depainting, and painting operations
  • Investigate material and process non-conformances, perform root cause analysis, and develop corrective and preventive actions
  • Conduct failure analysis and material evaluations using laboratory equipment such as thickness gauges, optical and scanning microscopes, conductivity meters, and hardness testers
  • Prepare formal engineering reports documenting laboratory findings, technical analyses, and recommendations for process improvements
  • Review, update, and support development of material protection process specifications and technical documentation
  • Support research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) efforts through Design of Experiments (DOE), test plan development, and material characterization testing
  • Perform hands-on coating applications and laboratory testing including corrosion, environmental, and thermal exposure evaluations
  • Analyze test results to assess material performance and recommend material selection, optimization, or process improvements
  • Collaborate with government stakeholders, program managers, and production personnel to communicate technical findings and resolve engineering issues
  • Contribute to project execution within the Materials Protection Team while ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory, and technical standards

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in material science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, or related scientific/technical discipline from an ABET accredited college or university
  • At least 3 years of experience in materials engineering
  • Demonstrated experience working in a hands-on laboratory or manufacturing process support role
  • Practical knowledge of one or more of the following material process areas: electroplating, inorganic/organic coatings, chemical cleaning/stripping, corrosion control, and wear-resistant technologies
  • Experience with materials characterization and analytical techniques (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, mechanical testing, or electrochemical testing)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot technical problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions
  • Strong technical writing skills with experience generating formal engineering reports, test plans, and technical procedures
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an aerospace, defense, or MRO industrial environment
  • Knowledge of DoD/Navy-specific material and process specifications
  • Hands-on experience with test methods such as ASTM B117 (Salt Spray), ASTM G85 (Modified Salt Spray), and others related to coating and material performance
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) principles and statistical analysis

At ASI, we understand that everyones journey is different. If you are not sure if your experience meets the requirements, we encourage you to apply. We are interested in what you have to offer.
