The Materials & Packaging Engineer III will lead and support the development of packaging and material solutions for R&D initiatives, sustainability programs, and emerging global packaging regulations. This role will collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners throughout the development process to identify, evaluate, and advance innovative packaging materials, components, processes, and designs. The engineer will also work with global regulatory and compliance stakeholders to assess and implement new materials, technologies, and suppliers that enhance product sustainability and align with evolving international packaging standards.
Responsibilities
  • Lead evaluations of new packaging materials, components, and processing technologies with a focus on sustainability and global compliance requirements.
  • Research, identify, and develop new packaging materials and design, including assessment of novel plastics, bio-based, and recyclable materials.
  • Function as the packaging and material SME on project teams, ensuring team understanding of packaging requirements, standards, and testing, with emphasis on plastics and polymer materials science.
  • Utilize analytical methods to determine structure-property relationships, process parameters, and material properties relevant to packaging performance.
  • Explore potential new manufacturing processes and technologies; support existing manufacturing processes, quality improvements, and cost reductions.
  • Manage, create, and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) to establish robust packaging material and process performance.
  • Manage activities with external suppliers, material suppliers, and packaging vendors.
  • Lead technology transfer of new packaging materials and processes.
  • May serve as engineering lead on projects; may provide daily direction to technical team members assigned to project teams.

Requirements
Education:
  • BS in Materials Science, Plastics Engineering, Packaging Science, Chemical Engineering, or related Scientific/Engineering discipline required
  • MS in Materials Science, Packaging Science, or Plastics Engineering preferred

Experience:
  • 7+ years in Engineering, Package Design, Materials Development, and/or Process Development
  • Proven hands-on technical experience within a development environment.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations by converting high-level or loosely defined objectives into clear, actionable plans and durable processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to create structure, define requirements, and build new capabilities in areas without existing frameworks.
  • Strong background in plastic component design, injection mold tooling, and the development and validation of tight-tolerance manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with medical devices or other FDA-regulated products is highly preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills, including experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across diverse internal teams and collaborate as a strong team contributor.

Specialized Training & Skills:
  • ISO-9000, GMP, and DFSS experience; Six Sigma/DOE methodology a plus
  • Strong understanding of polymer structure-property relationships and plastics/materials behavior
  • Design software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD); Statistical software (Minitab, JMP, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, drive innovation, and execute risk-based decision processes across organizational boundaries
  • Strong communication, documentation, organization, and presentation skills required

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $95,000.00 and $115,000.00. The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.

They may also be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, disability and life insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, a tuition reimbursement program (select degrees), company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
