Job description

Position Summary
The Materials Control Coordinator is responsible for the accurate and timely execution of daily material flow activities supporting manufacturing operations. The role performs receiving, shipping, material movement, staging, inventory transactions, raw material handling, remnant control, and other Materials Control activities as assigned.
The Materials Control Coordinator ensures that material is properly identified, documented, transacted, stored, staged, and moved in accordance with production priorities, quality requirements, and established procedures. This role is a hands-on position that supports reliable production flow by ensuring the correct material is in the correct location at the required time.
The role is intended to provide disciplined execution of the site's routine Materials Control activities while maintaining strong standards for traceability, transaction accuracy, safety, organization, and responsiveness to production needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Material Receiving
โ€ข Receive raw material, purchased components, outside processed product, and other incoming items
โ€ข Verify quantities, purchase order information, material identification, and required documentation
โ€ข Complete receiving transactions accurately in the ERP system
โ€ข Maintain required heat, lot, certification, and traceability information
โ€ข Properly identify, label, and place received material in designated locations
โ€ข Escalate quantity, condition, identification, or documentation discrepancies to the Materials Control Specialist or Supervisor
2. Material Movement & Staging
โ€ข Move material between receiving, storage, production, outside processing, inspection, and shipping areas as required
โ€ข Stage raw material, components, and work-in-process based on production priorities
โ€ข Verify part number, job number, quantity, identification, and destination before movement
โ€ข Maintain physical identification and traceability throughout material movement
โ€ข Support production personnel by ensuring scheduled material is delivered to the appropriate work area
โ€ข Escalate missing, misplaced, damaged, or improperly identified material
3. Inventory Control
โ€ข Complete material issue, transfer, return, location, and other assigned inventory transactions
โ€ข Maintain accurate storage locations and material identification
โ€ข Support cycle counting, physical inventory, and inventory verification activities
โ€ข Assist in investigating discrepancies between physical inventory and ERP records
โ€ข Maintain organized raw material, component, work-in-process, and remnant storage areas
โ€ข Ensure material is not moved or consumed without appropriate identification and transaction discipline
4. Shipping Execution
โ€ข Prepare completed product for shipment in accordance with established shipping instructions
โ€ข Verify part numbers, revisions, quantities, customer information, and packaging requirements
โ€ข Complete assigned ERP shipping transactions and documentation
โ€ข Apply required labels and prepare shipping documentation
โ€ข Support customer-specific packaging and shipment requirements
โ€ข Ensure product is protected from damage during handling, staging, and shipment
5. Raw Material & Remnant Control
โ€ข Properly store and identify bar, plate, sheet, tube, billet, and other raw material forms
โ€ข Maintain heat, lot, material specification, and other required traceability information
โ€ข Identify and return usable remnants to controlled storage after production use
โ€ข Ensure remnants are properly labeled and associated with required traceability documentation
โ€ข Assist in maintaining orderly and efficient raw material storage locations
โ€ข Report unidentified, damaged, or questionable material immediately
6. Production Support
โ€ข Respond to material movement and staging requests in accordance with established priorities
โ€ข Support Production Control and production personnel in locating material and maintaining job flow
โ€ข Assist with movement of material to and from band saw, waterjet, inspection, outside processing, and production areas
โ€ข Support expedited jobs and shipment-critical priorities as directed
โ€ข Communicate material shortages, staging problems, or movement constraints to the Materials Control Specialist or Supervisor
7. Safety, Quality & Workplace Discipline
โ€ข Follow all safety requirements, PPE requirements, lifting practices, and material handling procedures
โ€ข Safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, carts, or other material handling equipment when trained and authorized
โ€ข Maintain clean, organized, and clearly identified material storage and staging areas
โ€ข Follow quality procedures, traceability requirements, work instructions, and standard work
โ€ข Protect material and finished product from damage, contamination, loss, or improper mixing
โ€ข Participate in training, continuous improvement, cycle count, and housekeeping activities
Execution Authority
The Materials Control Coordinator is authorized to:
โ€ข Perform approved Materials Control transactions within assigned responsibilities
โ€ข Move and stage properly identified material according to established priorities
โ€ข Receive and ship material in accordance with approved procedures
โ€ข Stop and escalate material movement when identification, traceability, quantity, condition, or documentation appears incorrect
โ€ข Report inventory discrepancies, material shortages, shipment concerns, or unsafe conditions
โ€ข Recommend practical improvements to material handling, storage, staging, and workflow
The Materials Control Coordinator does not have authority to:
โ€ข Independently change production priorities
โ€ข Commit delivery dates to customers
โ€ข Substitute raw material, specifications, or material conditions
โ€ข Disposition nonconforming material
โ€ข Change controlled manufacturing, inspection, or quality requirements
โ€ข Make purchasing commitments
โ€ข Perform unauthorized ERP adjustments intended to reconcile inventory discrepancies without proper investigation and approval
Qualifications
โ€ข High school diploma or equivalent required
โ€ข 1+ years of experience in manufacturing, materials, inventory, shipping and receiving, warehousing, or a related environment preferred
โ€ข Experience in aerospace, defense, precision machining, or regulated manufacturing environments preferred
โ€ข Basic computer skills and ability to learn ERP/MRP transactions
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate material identification and documentation
โ€ข Ability to read purchase orders, labels, job travelers, packing documentation, and basic production documentation
โ€ข Ability to perform basic counting, measurement, and inventory verification
โ€ข Ability to safely operate material handling equipment following required training
โ€ข Strong reliability, organization, communication, and follow-through
Physical Requirements
โ€ข Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday
โ€ข Ability to frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach, and perform physical material handling activities
โ€ข Ability to safely climb and work from ladders as required to access material storage locations, perform inventory activities, or retrieve and stage material
โ€ข Ability to routinely lift, carry, position, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds
โ€ข Ability to handle heavier materials through the appropriate use of forklifts, cranes, hoists, pallet jacks, carts, team lifting, or other approved material handling equipment
โ€ข Ability to push and pull carts, pallet jacks, containers, and other material handling devices
โ€ข Ability to handle, count, label, package, stage, and physically verify raw material, work-in-process, and finished product
โ€ข Ability to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, hoists, or other material handling equipment when trained and authorized
โ€ข Ability to visually read labels, material markings, heat and lot identification, job travelers, shipping documentation, and computer screens
โ€ข Ability to perform repetitive material movement, packaging, labeling, scanning, counting, and ERP transaction activities
โ€ข Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
Work Environment
โ€ข Work is primarily performed in manufacturing, warehouse, receiving, shipping, raw material storage, and production environments
โ€ข Regular exposure to manufacturing noise, moving machinery, forklifts, cranes, material handling equipment, and production traffic
โ€ข May be exposed to metal stock, sharp edges, oils, coolants, cutting fluids, dust, chips, and other conditions typical of a precision manufacturing environment
