What does a matchmaker do?

A matchmaker is a professional who helps individuals find compatible romantic partners. They get to know their clients' personalities, preferences, and relationship goals, and then use interviews, personality assessments, and their own network to suggest suitable matches. Matchmakers often provide coaching, feedback, and support throughout the dating process to help clients build successful relationships. They may work independently, for agencies, or specialize in certain types of clients.

What does a matchmaker do?

A professional matchmaker introduces their clients to partners with whom they could potentially develop a romantic relationship. Your duties involve assessing the personality traits of each client and finding out information about the qualities that they seek in a partner. You then match the client with potential partners who have the desired profile. You usually meet and interview each candidate to assess the chance of a romantic connection with your client. Your responsibilities include scheduling an initial meeting between your client and their match. You can work for a matchmaking service or operate your own matchmaking business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a matchmaker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Matchmaker, you need strong interpersonal skills, a keen understanding of relationship dynamics, and typically some background in psychology, counseling, or social work. Familiarity with CRM software, matchmaking databases, and online dating platforms is commonly required, and some certifications in relationship coaching can be advantageous. Exceptional communication, active listening, and empathy help build trust with clients and facilitate successful matches. These skills are crucial for accurately assessing compatibility and fostering meaningful connections between clients.

How does a matchmaker typically collaborate with clients to understand their preferences and ensure successful matches?

A Matchmaker works closely with clients through in-depth consultations to understand their values, lifestyle, and relationship goals. This often involves regular communication, personality assessments, and feedback sessions after introductions. Matchmakers act as both advisors and advocates, offering guidance throughout the dating process and adjusting search criteria based on client experiences. Collaboration is key, as ongoing dialogue helps refine matches and increases the likelihood of successful, lasting relationships.

What is the difference between Matchmaker vs Recruiter?

AspectMatchmakerRecruiter
CredentialsOften no formal certification, but industry-specific trainingTypically requires HR or recruiting certifications
Work EnvironmentPrivate matchmaking firms, luxury services, or niche marketsCorporate HR departments, staffing agencies, recruiting firms
Industry UsageUsed mainly in personal services, dating, and niche marketsWidely used across various industries for hiring
Search & Comparison IntentMatching individuals for personal or romantic purposesFinding suitable candidates for job openings

While both roles involve connecting people, a Matchmaker focuses on personal or romantic matches, often in niche markets, with less formal credentials. A Recruiter works within organizations or agencies to fill job positions, requiring HR certifications and working in broader industries.

Is being a matchmaker a good job?

Being a matchmaker involves helping clients find compatible partners, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills. The job can be flexible and may offer commission-based earnings, but it often involves irregular hours and emotional labor. Success depends on reputation, networking, and understanding client needs.

Job description

Know where you belong!
Match Group is a leading provider of dating products across the globe. Our portfolio includes Tinder, Hinge, Match, Meetic, PlentyOfFish, OkCupid, The League, HER, and others, each designed to spark meaningful connections for singles worldwide. Creating a sense of belonging doesn’t stop at our products - it’s the foundation of every team we hire.

When it comes to dating, the connection starts online, but the real magic happens once you meet in real life (IRL).  We think the same is true for creating the best platforms, so we work together IRL 3 days/week.

About the team

The Marketing Technology (MarTech) team is a newly formed team building the measurement, attribution, and operations infrastructure that powers user acquisition across Match Group's portfolio of dating apps: Tinder, Hinge, Match, Chispa, The League, Plenty of Fish, and more.

Our charter spans the full path: the marketing and attribution SDKs embedded in the apps, the server-side event delivery that feeds our ad platforms and warehouse, and the tooling marketers use to run campaigns, manage creative, and sync audiences.

About the role

We're hiring a versatile engineer who can work on a mobile platform (iOS or Android) and the backend / full stack. You'll be hands-on in the apps, instrumenting them and building the server-side services behind them, as well as on the marketing operations tooling our teams run on. This is a rare full-spectrum role for someone who genuinely likes owning a feature from the client SDK all the way to the server.

This is a ground-floor opportunity. Because the team is early and serves the entire Match Group portfolio, you'll build the marketing technology that every brand relies on, contribute to the team's foundations and standards as they take shape, and grow your scope alongside the team. You'll also help power our move toward more AI-native marketing operations, building the tooling and agent-ready infrastructure that lets our marketers work in fundamentally new ways. It's a great place to grow: the work has real reach, and there's room to take on more as you do.

Most of all, we're looking for someone who's genuinely passionate about marketing technology: you're excited by attribution, measurement, and the systems that make marketing work, and you want to go deep on the domain rather than treat it as just another stack.

What you'll work on:

Work on this team spans two broad areas, and you'll move between them as priorities shift:

MarTech implementation - keeping our foundational MarTech stack on the clients healthy and well-maintained:

  • Marketing and attribution event instrumentation in our iOS and Android apps

  • Privacy and consent handling

  • Event delivery that feeds our attribution partners, ad platforms, and data warehouse

Marketing operations tooling - building the platforms and services marketers and analysts run on:

  • Programmatic ad-platform management

  • Marketing tooling such as creative management systems and Audience syncing

  • AI/agent-driven workflows and MCP’s

What we're looking for:
  • 4+ years building and shipping production software, with hands-on experience on iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin), including SDK integration and the App Store / Play Store release lifecycle

  • Full-stack / backend experience: building APIs and server-side services in a modern language (e.g. Node, Python, Go, or Kotlin), or a strong foundation and the drive to grow into it

  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and CI/CD

  • Demonstrated ability to take ambiguous or unowned problems (several items in this scope have no current owner) and drive them to resolution

  • Active, effective use of AI tooling (Claude Code, Copilot, etc.) to ramp on unfamiliar code and ship faster

  • Comfort owning your work end to end and moving between the client and the backend

  • Interest in building MCP servers/tools to expose our platforms to Claude and other agents

Nice to have
  • Experience across both iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin)
  • Experience with marketing / attribution SDKs (AppsFlyer, Firebase, Adjust, Branch), SKAdNetwork, and the Google Play Install Referrer API

  • Ad-platform APIs (Meta, Google Ads, TikTok) and server-side tracking (Meta CAPI, server-side GTM)

  • Experience building LLM-powered or agentic tooling, including MCP

  • MarTech / AdTech domain background

The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $215,000.  Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary range is reflective of a position based in Palo Alto, California. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.

Our Values
  • Take the Lead: We don't ghost our work or each other. Just as users don't leave their matches hanging, we don't let each other down.
  • Move Fast: We have a bias for action and urgency. Something that could be done tomorrow would be better if done today.
  • Better Together: We keep connection at the heart of dating and at the heart of how we work. Just as our users are better when they connect with others, so are we when we collaborate.
  • Real Talk: We say the hard thing the human way. Just as we ask our users to behave with kindness and candor in our community, we expect all of us to do the same.
  • Safety First: We act with integrity, transparency, and consistency so people feel safe—whether they're swiping, matching, or working alongside us.
  • Spark Fun: We have fun to unlock creativity, fuel innovation, and help us build better experiences for daters.
