Masters Indigenous information
What are Masters in Indigenous Studies?
What unique challenges might I face as a Master's-level professional working in Indigenous affairs, and how can I prepare for them?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Masters-level Indigenous Studies professional, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Masters Indigenous vs Indigenous Community Coordinator?
| Criteria | Masters Indigenous | Indigenous Community Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Master's degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, or related field | Bachelor's degree often sufficient; some roles prefer experience over advanced degrees |
| Work Environment | Academic, research, policy development, or higher-level program management | Community-based settings, local organizations, or government agencies |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Universities, research institutes, government departments | Indigenous organizations, community groups, local government |
| Common Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding advanced qualifications and roles in Indigenous fields | Entry to mid-level community engagement roles |
The Masters Indigenous typically involves advanced education and research roles within academia or policy, requiring a master's degree. In contrast, an Indigenous Community Coordinator focuses on community engagement and program implementation, often with a bachelor's degree and practical experience. Both roles serve Indigenous communities but differ in scope, responsibilities, and work environment.

Work with Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education faculty to develop and deliver robust distance delivery sections of courses that will meet requirements for the Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education degree programs. Facilitate incorporation of content and methods grounded in Indigenous education and rural education. Work with UAF SOE faculty and administration to research, develop, and deliver flexible course models to help with credit attainment for pre-service education students, including models such as 1-2 week course intensives.

Work with Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education program faculty to ensure robust integration of Indigenous and local knowledge into education preparation programs. Work with UAF SOE faculty, administration and staff to support and expand district partnerships to promote recruitment into the education profession.
To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will be a student-centered educator who is team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills. They will demonstrate commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate-level teacher prep courses at the university level. They will bring creativity and experience in educating pre-service teachers through in-person and digitally delivered coursework. They will have experience, in some combination, working with Indigenous populations, rural education and/or Alaska school districts. The ideal applicant will be able to work independently and collaboratively, make effective decisions under pressure, build and maintain strong relationships, and contribute positively to a diverse and collegial academic team.
A commitment to Alaska Native and rural communities, and the ability to advocate for the teaching profession and the university are key aspects of the position.
