Job description

The Whitney Academy, Inc. is a residential treatment center. We serve adolescent boys, ages 10 to 22 who present with cognitive delays and a spectrum of behavioral problems. These problems include psychiatric diagnoses, sexualized and trauma reactive behaviors.

Our mission is to provide education, residential and treatment environments that are as “normal” as possible given the needs of the students we serve. As a Special Education Teacher, you will provide classroom instruction and lesson planning to students performing below grade level in a six-student, self-contained classroom. Other requirements include excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills, and ability to collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team.


Special Education Teacher

(Certified in either Moderate 5-12, or Severe Disabilities K-12)


Special Education Teacher Responsibilities:

  • Providing individualized instruction based on student needs
  • Conducting evaluations in preparation for IEP development
  • Using the results to develop measurable IEPs
  • Special Education Teacher is responsible for monitoring IEP related programs to ensure accurate and consistent implementation
  • Collecting and summarizing data
  • Supervising and training Teacher Aide working in the classroom
  • Providing written student reports and presenting student progress at team meetings


Special Education Teacher Requirements:

  • Certified in either Massachusetts Moderate 5-12, or Severe Disabilities K-12
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • RMV, CORI and DSS checks required
  • Full Time (year-round) — 35 hours per week, 225-day school year
