The University of Utah seeks candidates who can be worldโ€‘class leaders in Biomedical Imaging to fill a tenureโ€‘track Assistant Professor opening. Exceptional candidates will also be considered at other ranks. This is a collaborative faculty search among the Department of Biomedical Engineering within the College of Engineering and the Department of Radiology & Imaging Sciences within the School of Medicine. Candidates are anticipated to have a primary appointment in an engineering department with a secondary or adjunct appointment in a medical department.

Research Interests and Responsibilities

General areas of interest include Biomedical Imaging Hardware Development and Biomedical Signal and Image Processing of all biomedical imaging modalities. Specific areas of high interest include Image Guided Therapy and Interventions, as well as AI and Computational Imaging. The applicant is anticipated to have a secondary or adjunct appointment in the Utah Center for Advanced Imaging Research (UCAIR), which is composed of 17 PhD faculty and numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Many of the UCAIR faculty perform MRI research, while others investigate CT and molecular imaging. Ultrasound, interventional techniques, and neuromodulation are also current research topics. Candidates may also interface with the Scientific Computing & Imaging (SCI) Institute, which facilitates multidisciplinary collaborations across imaging, visualization, highโ€‘performance computing, simulation, and data science.

Institutional and Research Infrastructure

The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 23 tenureโ€‘track faculty, 5 research faculty, and 94 adjunct faculty. All faculty are engaged in extramurally funded research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and service. The Department of Radiology & Imaging Sciences operates the Utah MRI Research Center with four MRI scanners (one 0.55โ€ฏT, and three 3โ€ฏT scanners). A 7โ€ฏT scanner will be arriving at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute in 2027. Research is also performed using stateโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘art PET, CT, and ultrasound scanners.
