Position Summary
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide daily care for research animals in accordance with federal, state and intuitional requirements. This position requires more technical knowledge and ability to work independently, with some supervisory responsibilities.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs animal husbandry duties, such as changing cages, water bottles, and racks.
• Feeds, changes cages and racks, and waters animals daily to maintain quality support for research projects.
• Sanitizes animal facility and equipment such as racks and cages and placing in washer in order to maintain a healthy living environment for animal species.
• Autoclaves biohazard material, equipment and all bedding to ensure freedom from germs.
• Maintains room by monitoring environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, air exchanges) Also, by sweeping, mopping, maintaining assigned rooms to ensure neatness and cleanliness.
• Maintains accurate records daily of animal population and other various forms of documentation.
• Maintains cage processing in the cage wash area.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to laboratory animals.
• High level of proficiency in recognizing obvious signs of illness, discomfort, and irregularities, such as abnormal food and water consumption, abnormal stool, unusual behavior, death, malocclusion, ear mites, nails, abscesses and wounds, in all species of laboratory animals.
• Experience in assisting with withdrawing blood, collecting fecal, rectal and nasal swabs; and basic laboratory procedures as assigned.
• Experience in assisting with treating various health issues as well as administering medications and drugs, as directed.
• Basic knowledge of anesthesia.
• Assists in providing training for animal care staff in the area of restraining techniques, administering injections, and breeding.
• Assists in providing colony management and reports any signs of distress and/or diseases.
Assigns and reviews the work of other technicians by conducting daily checks of animal rooms as directed by the Animal Care Technician III or Facility Manager.
• Provides treatment of sick and injured animals as assigned.
• Assists in providing pre and post-operative care for surgery animals.
• Monitors and maintains upkeep and the maintenance of equipment.
• Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to laboratory animals.
• Knowledge of anatomical and physiological difference of various laboratory animals.
• Knowledge of personnel safety and biohazard containment; knowledge of the principles of disease control and prevention; maintaining clean animals, quarantine wards, and controlled air room.
• Knowledge of the principals of disease control and prevention.
• Knowledge of the principles of asepsis.
• Skill in administering various types of medication, anesthesia, and euthanasia.
• Skill in withdrawing fluids, collecting fecal samples, rectal or nasal swabs, and garages laboratory animals.
• Skill in handling, restraining and sex all common laboratory animals.
• Skill in recognizing obvious signs of illness, discomfort, and irregularities, such as abnormal food and water consumption, abnormal stool, unusual behavior, death, malocclusion, ear mites, nails, abscesses and wounds, in all species of laboratory animals.
• Ability to work with individuals at all levels.
• Ability to lift 50lbs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Some supervisory responsibilities may be assigned depending on level of abilities and need.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or related field; minimum of one (1) year of veterinary or animal lab setting. ALAT Certification by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Must have LAT Certification by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within a year of start date. Must have a valid Georgia's Driver's License.
OR
Associate's degree in Animal Science or related field; minimum of two (2) years of veterinary or lab setting. ALAT Certification by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Must have LAT Certification by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within a year of start date. Must have a valid Georgia's Driver's License.
OR
High School Diploma or equivalent required; minimum of three (3) years of veterinary or lab setting. LAT Certification by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Must have a valid Georgia's Driver's License.
