Job Description

The Medical Technologist is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests in microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation and urinalysis.

Job Relationships

Reports to the Laboratory Manager

Principal Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the performance of both routine and special test procedures for which qualified by education, training and experience. Accountable for accurate results and the proper use of quality controls, materials and procedures. Must recognize the interdependency of tests and conditions that affect test results. Correct own errors, and use and maintain a variety of complex instruments. Watch for potential problems and correct any that arise. See that reagent inventories are kept at proper levels. Under minimal supervision, work on the development of new methods and techniques to be used in the laboratory. Serve as a methodology "troubleshooter" in the investigating and correcting problems. May be responsible for the work of others during the temporary absence of the manager. Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Draw blood samples.
  • Perform routine, special and automated tests for which qualified in hematology, coagulation urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, and immunology.
  • Set up, read and report results of cultures in bacteriology.
  • Make and read smears.
  • Perform prescribed quality control procedure for all tests and record results in proper record books.
  • Teach laboratory procedure to new laboratory personnel.
  • Perform test procedures in accordance with the procedure manual.
  • Inventory and request supplies and reagents as needed.
  • Prepare reagents as needed.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Assist the physicians in any manner you can.
  • Abide by the policies of this laboratory.
  • Report test results to authorized personnel.
  • Required to rotate between sections due to variations in workload, staffing and orientation programs.
  • Required to rotate shifts with other laboratory personnel.
  • Required to fill in at satellites.
  • Print PE-7 log at satellites and record workload.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

a) Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or b) Three (3) years of college plus one year of medical technology training, or c) Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, plus one year of clinical laboratory work experience or d) Has passed the HEW proficiency exam. Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.

  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to recognize and identify the causes of problems (technical and instrumental), present alternatives and determine solutions.
  • Must be able to perform complex analyses which may require many steps and variables.
  • Must be able to communicate facts and ideas to a variety of people within and outside the laboratory.
  • Must have an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments and their interrelationships.
  • Must be able to work under stress.
  • Responsible for own work and decisions.
