Job description

Overview
The next generation UK fast attack submarine (SSNA) engineering team needs Propulsion Plant Electrical Systems Engineers. The SSNA Power Distribution Group has openings for highly motivated engineers to support the development of a new electric plant design for the next class of UK submarines. The group is in the process of assisting in the development of a new cost-effective, power dense, electric plant architecture that utilizes the latest developments in solid state power electronics for power conversion, system protection and coordination.
Responsibilities include supporting development of the SSNA electric plant for the next generation attack submarine. This work includes supporting design/performance/cost/ship trade studies, performing analysis of key components, interface development and reviewing developmental component requirements. The development and use of next generation electric plant models (Matlab/Simulink, etc.) are also needed. This also includes managing component vendor efforts such as developing scoping, review of vendor technical documents, and tracking their performance. The development effort represents the evolution of the previous submarine programs through the optimization of existing characteristics, integration of lessons learned, and deployment of advanced features to support the new platform's submarine propulsion system needs.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Nuclear Engineering or Computer Science
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance through the Department of Defense

Preferred:
  • Masters in Engineering
  • Experience with MATLAB tools is desired
  • Previous experience in development of electric plant systems and components, particularly power electronics, is highly desired
  • Knowledge of rotating machines (e.g. turbine generators) is a plus

  • Must be highly motivated, work independently, and be willing to interact with other engineering disciplines and the design and operations communities.
  • Proficiency with MS Offices products: Word, Excel, Project, OneNote, PowerPoint
  • A self-starter with the ability to work within a team environment
  • Possess above average written and oral communication skills.
  • Be capable of establishing and cultivating relationships with customers and suppliers.
  • Ability to adapt to emergent tasks and drive them to completion.
  • Have a willingness to "do what is takes" attitude to meet a demanding schedule including working nights and weekends to provide first-time quality products on time.
