What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam programmer?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

Do Mastercam programmers make good money?

Mastercam programmers typically earn competitive wages, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers who are proficient in CAD/CAM software and have experience with complex machining often command higher pay. Certification and specialization can also influence earning potential.

Job Title: Manufacturing EngineerJob Description

The Manufacturing Engineer will support and improve CNC and general manufacturing operations in a machine shop environment, with a focus on process optimization, documentation, and quality. This role combines hands-on work on the production floor with office-based engineering tasks, including CNC programming, tooling and fixture design, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position offers flexible scheduling and opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities as you grow in the role.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs to support efficient and accurate machining operations.
  • Select appropriate tools, work holding methods, and fixtures to ensure safe, repeatable, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
  • Apply manufacturing engineering principles to improve productivity, reduce waste, and enhance product quality in a CNC/machine shop environment.
  • Support and refine molding, casting, grinding, and finishing processes to meet quality and performance requirements.
  • Use 3D CAD tools to design or modify fixtures, tooling, and components as needed for production.
  • Maintain engineering records and implement engineering changes in accordance with company standards.
  • Create, update, and maintain technical documentation, including work instructions, process flow diagrams, and other process-related documents.
  • Track and report project status and key performance metrics to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
  • Help develop and maintain critical quality documents in alignment with quality system requirements.
  • Use measurement tools and standard QC inspection protocols to support quality control and problem-solving activities.
  • Work within ISO 9001 quality system requirements and support continuous improvement of quality processes.
  • Perform all job duties with a lean mindset, identifying and implementing opportunities to eliminate waste and improve flow.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures while working on the production floor and in the office.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and other cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues and support day-to-day manufacturing needs.
  • Participate in and sometimes lead continuous improvement and special projects as assigned, contributing technical expertise and practical solutions.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a CNC or machine shop environment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an engineering or technical role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated CNC skills, including programming, work holding, and tool selection.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software for design and engineering tasks.
  • Experience with ERP software in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with hand and power tools.
  • Experience using measurement tools and applying standard QC inspection protocols.
  • Experience working with quality systems in accordance with ISO 9001.
  • Ability to interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with production, engineering, and quality teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Knowledge of molding, casting, grinding, and finishing processes is a plus.
  • Experience in manufacturing engineering and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Background in tooling and fixture design for CNC and other manufacturing processes.
  • Experience using Mastercam or similar CNC programming software.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized technical documentation and records.
  • Comfort working in both office and production floor environments.
  • Interest in and ability to take on leadership responsibilities over time.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
Work Environment

This role splits time between an office setting and the production floor. The production floor manufactures brake pads and can be dusty, somewhat dirty, and occasionally odorous, reflecting a typical heavy manufacturing environment. You will work around CNC machines, molding and casting equipment, grinding and finishing operations, and standard measurement and inspection tools. Standard work hours follow a daytime schedule with flexible start times, allowing you to begin your day around 8:00 or 9:00 and work a full day.
