What are some common challenges Mastercam Programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

Job description

Step into a day on our floor at Blast Cleaning Technologies (BCT)

You grab a hot coffee (on us), greet teammates, and pull up a new work order. You review the print, choose the workholding, and fine‑tune a setup for a Takisawa lathe or an Okuma VMC. You write and edit G- and M-code, validate your path in Mastercam, and send the first part. Precision measurements confirm it: to print, first time. Between runs, you perform preventive maintenance, optimize feeds and speeds, and hand off conforming parts to inspection—confident in every dimension.

What you’ll do
  • Own full setups and production on CNC lathes and mills, running parts complete to print.
  • Program at the machine (long hand) and via Mastercam; read, write, and edit G-code and M-code.
  • Design and build fixturing; mount, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces with precision.
  • Calculate speeds, feeds, and cut locations; adjust feeds/speeds and change tooling as conditions evolve.
  • Stop machines to change over tooling, modify setups, or remove finished workpieces following the required sequence.
  • Measure every critical feature using precision hand metrology, gauges, templates, and fixtures to verify conformance.
  • Perform required machine maintenance, including spindle care, alignment checks, and basic repair.
  • Champion BCT’s culture and core values through collaboration, craftsmanship, and safety.

Note: responsibilities may evolve; you may be asked to take on additional tasks as business needs change.

Bring your expertise
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 4+ years setting up and operating CNC lathes and mills.
  • 2+ years programming with Mastercam or long‑hand at the control.
  • Manufacturing experience required; foundry exposure is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and lay out features on raw material.
  • Self-driven, organized, and detail-obsessed with strong computer skills.
Technical strengths we value
  • GD&T
  • Equipment Troubleshooting
  • CNC Tooling
  • Troubleshooting Skills
  • CNC Machine Repair
  • G-Code
  • Tape Measure Reading
  • M-Code
  • CNC Machine Setup & Changeover
  • Precision Measurement & Hand Metrology
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Machine Geometry & Alignment
  • Spindle Maintenance & Repair
  • Machine Setups for Production Runs
  • Manual Machining Skills
Tools and platforms you’ll touch
  • CNC Mill (3-4 axis VMC) (Bridgeport, Okuma)
  • CNC Lathe (2-4 axis) (Takisawa)
  • CAM Software (Mastercam)
  • 3D Modeling (AutoCAD, Solidworks)
Why machinists choose BCT
  • Market-leading compensation, benefits, and 401(k): Employer match up to 6%.
  • Medical that really works: BCT covers 90% of premiums with low deductibles, zero coinsurance, and broad networks.
  • Time to recharge: Generous PTO and paid U.S. holidays.
  • Casual, friendly shop: Dress for the work; enjoy a collaborative atmosphere.
  • Historic space, modern investment: Work in our upgraded West Allis facility with over $2M in recent improvements.
  • Innovation built in: We reinvest continuously—our cutting‑edge foundry says it all.
  • Everyday perks: Free coffee and popcorn, plus summer cookouts.
  • Keep learning: Tuition reimbursement and ongoing training.
