Primary Position Purpose:
The Software Engineer II role is responsible for building the tools that power our freight platform. The Engineer II has a passion for tackling hard problems. A veteran who knows how to get things done and how-to future-proof our architecture and implementations to scale for years to come. This position plays a pivotal role in shaping the definition, vision, design, roadmap, and development of all systems at U.S. Xpress.
Position Functions:
• Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative software solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
• Own the development lifecycle with a focus on developing new features and functionalities for assigned software applications.
• Use software engineering best practices to ensure a high standard of quality for all of the team deliverables.
• Write high quality distributed system software.
• Work in an agile development environment, always working on the most important projects.
• Collaborate with other teams and across departments to deliver new features and products.
What We're Looking For:
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus 3 years of relevant professional experience or Master's degree in a related field plus 1 year of relevant professional experience required
Experience
  • Experience with at least one modern programming language (Java, Python, JavaScript, Go or C#) and unit testing
  • Experience in debugging in shell and AWS
  • Experience with AWS services (IAM, S3, Dynamo)
  • Previous experience in mentoring junior engineers or leading small tasks within a team
  • Previous experience in creating technical documentation

• Transportation, Logistics, and/or Tech industry experience a plus
Skills & Abilities
• Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Good communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a team
• Owned simple applications or modules, ensuring the code is maintained using best practices
• Created and maintained documentation for functions within the code to ensure clarity and maintainability
• Familiarity with common debugging tools and techniques
• Adept at assessing organizational dynamics and managing change
• Works quickly and efficiently. Able to test solutions, learn, and iterate quickly
• Proactive and pragmatic problem solver
• Communicates effectively across multiple mediums
