Job description

Title: Landscape Maintenance Supervisor

Employment Type: 6-month temporary assignment with potential of conversion

Compensation Range: $33.60 - $52.08 per hour

Location: Otay Mesa, San Diego, CA

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday and alternating Saturdays, On-Site, 5/40 or 9/80 schedule

Company Overview

This regional public-sector transportation organization supports transportation infrastructure and associated operating facilities. The environment includes toll road assets, roadside landscaping, irrigation systems, grounds, and operational facilities requiring coordinated maintenance, safety oversight, contractor management, and infrastructure improvement.


Position Summary

The Landscape Maintenance Supervisor will supervise, plan, coordinate, and perform functional, technical, and administrative duties related to landscape and irrigation system maintenance for toll road infrastructure and an Operations Center. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining the master landscaping plan, coordinating improvement projects, supervising staff, administering contractors, and supporting safe and effective field operations.

The selected candidate will be expected to work onsite in Otay Mesa, San Diego, California.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and coordinate supervisory, technical, and administrative duties for landscape and irrigation system maintenance projects, activities, and tasks.
  • Participate in personnel selection; assign and review technical staff work; establish and evaluate performance expectations; coordinate training; develop employee skills and competencies; and implement discipline or performance improvement plans when necessary.
  • Assist in developing and administering assigned project budgets, including fiscal forecasting, budget monitoring, and expenditure controls.
  • Support Requests for Proposals, including scopes of work, budgets, and vendor or contractor selection; administer contracts and monitor contractor performance, schedules, budgets, and quality.
  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, and perform landscape maintenance, erosion control, and slope stabilization activities, including weed control, fertilization, soil preparation, and plant, tree, shrub, and grass care.
  • Diagnose diseases and pests affecting landscapes, develop and implement treatment plans, and select appropriate replacement plants when necessary.
  • Prepare and update the master landscape plan and design and implement landscape improvement projects with consideration for aesthetics, safety, and scenic enhancement.
  • Prepare and update irrigation system and drainage plans and monitor and maintain irrigation systems physically and remotely.
  • Provide workplace, job safety, health, and environmental training and review and update standard operating procedures.
  • Operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in the work.
  • Perform periodic inspections of equipment, tools, and work methods to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Coordinate general maintenance and repair activities including pavement repair and sealing, debris and graffiti removal, painting, carpentry, and electrical repair.


Required Qualifications

  • Seven years of increasingly responsible landscape or irrigation system maintenance experience, including two years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and abilities.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Specialized training or college-level coursework in landscape maintenance or a related field.
  • Appropriate valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of landscape and irrigation maintenance practices.
  • Ability to supervise employees, coordinate field activities, and manage multiple maintenance priorities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting transportation, roadway, public works, municipal, or comparable infrastructure environments.
  • Experience developing scopes of work and supporting RFP processes.
  • Experience administering vendor and contractor relationships.
  • Experience with fiscal forecasting, project budgets, expenditure controls, and contract monitoring.
  • Experience with erosion control, slope stabilization, pest and disease diagnosis, irrigation planning, and drainage systems.
  • Experience developing or maintaining master landscape plans and coordinating landscape improvement projects.
