Job description

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is seeking an Indigenous Health Education Coordinator to support, adapt, oversee, and implement Indigenous Health Education across the faculty. Directly reporting into the Office of the Vice Dean, Education through the Wapanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP), this role plays a critical part in fulfilling Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #24 by advancing foundational skills-based training in cultural safety, anti-racism, and Indigenous health for health professional students. In this position, you will collaborate closely with academic programs, Indigenous communities, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to build strong engagement networks, enhance educational offerings, and champion transformative health education.

  • A degree or Master's in education (BEd, MEd) is preferred. A Master's in Educational or applied Psychology, Social Work, Health Sciences or related fields will also be considered. 
  • A minimum of three years' experience in education, curriculum organization or implementing courses. 
  • Knowledge of community protocols, practices, etc when working with/in Indigenous
    communities/peoples. 
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Language is an asset.
  • Knowledge of wise/promising practices for effective delivery/outcomes in student/faculty/staff learning vis-a-vis Indigenous health.

  • Coordinate and implement Indigenous Health education across the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, including the Northern Alberta Medical Program. 
  • Represent the unit and collaborate with faculty programs, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous health organizations on content development, course implementation, and ceremony.
  • Serve as primary contact for Faculty programs, community groups and other partners in Indigenous Health in respect of Indigenous Health Education; provide information about the Indigenous Health Education program offerings to prospective Indigenous students, and to interested faculty, students and staff.
  • Maintain and expand networks with Indigenous communities, Elders, health care professionals, and national circles to advocate for barrier removal and facilitate responsive engagement.
