What does a MDM architect do?

A Master Data Management (MDM) architect designs and implements strategies for managing an organization’s core data assets to ensure data consistency, accuracy, and integrity across systems. They analyze business requirements, develop data models, select appropriate MDM tools, and oversee the integration of data solutions, often working with data governance and quality teams. Strong knowledge of data architecture, SQL, and MDM platforms is essential for this role.

Is MDM outdated?

Master Data Management (MDM) remains a vital function for MDM architects and data professionals, as organizations continue to prioritize data accuracy, consistency, and governance. While new technologies like cloud platforms and AI tools enhance MDM solutions, the core principles of managing critical data assets are still essential in modern data environments.

What is the salary of a data architect?

The salary of a data architect varies based on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually. Master Data Management (MDM) architects, a specialized type of data architect, often earn toward the higher end of this range due to their expertise in data governance and integration tools.

What are the 4 MDM architectures?

Master Data Management (MDM) architectures typically include the Centralized, Decentralized, Hybrid, and Registry styles. These architectures define how master data is stored, managed, and synchronized across an organization, with the choice impacting data consistency and system complexity. MDM architects often evaluate these models to select the best fit for data governance and integration needs.

Job description

MDM Architect - Individual Contributor (Full-Time)

Location: Westerville, OH

Role Summary

The MDM Architect is a senior individual contributor responsible for defining and evolving the enterprise master data architecture across multiple domains, including Customer, Supplier, Item, and Product Hierarchy, with a mandate to expand into additional domains over time. This role operates in an environment with highly complex, regionally varying master data processes and a disparate application landscape, where master data is created, modified, and consumed across multiple systems and business workflows.

Master data is touched by multiple business functions-including Finance, Accounting, Sales, Marketing, Service, and Operations-each with differing requirements, ownership models, and timing of change. Rules governing golden records, duplication, and data lifecycle vary by region and domain, and in many cases are still evolving. This complexity requires an architect who can design scalable, resilient, and pragmatic solutions that protect the integrity of the golden record while enabling the business to operate at speed.

The MDM Architect partners closely with global business and IT stakeholders to translate data strategy, governance objectives, and business needs into executable architectures and delivered outcomes. The role demands strong technical depth, the ability to work across ambiguity, and the interpersonal skills to influence decisions and drive alignment without direct authority. Success is enabled by delivering trusted, timely, and operationally reliable master data that supports downstream operational and analytical use at enterprise scale.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Platform Strategy

  • Define and evolve the MDM domain and solution architecture across multiple master data domains.
  • Establish scalable architecture patterns for mastering, integration, data quality, and distribution of master data.
  • Translate enterprise data strategy into actionable architecture decisions that can be executed incrementally.
  • Ensure architectural consistency while allowing for variability in regional processes and data ownership models.
  • Provide architectural direction that enables future domain expansion without rework.

Golden Record, Data Quality, and Governance Enablement

  • Define and implement golden record strategies, including survivorship, ownership, and lifecycle management.
  • Design technical enablement for match, merge, and de-duplication, accounting for varying business rules.
  • Partner with governance and stewardship teams to embed data quality controls, exception handling, and accountability into the platform.
  • Enable measurable improvements in data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across consuming systems.
  • Ensure governance concepts are translated into practical, enforceable technical solutions.

Systems and Integration

  • Architect resilient, scalable integrations between MDM and upstream/downstream enterprise systems.
  • Design patterns for distributed data creation and maintenance, including synchronization and conflict resolution.
  • Ensure master data is delivered accurately and on time to operational and analytical platforms, including the data lake.
  • Define integration standards that support reliability, performance, observability, and recoverability.
  • Reduce operational fragility through simplified data flows and clear system responsibilities.

Security, Compliance, and Risk Management

  • Design solutions that meet security, access control, auditability, and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate controls are built into master data creation, change, and distribution processes.
  • Proactively identify architectural, data, and operational risks and drive mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with risk, audit, and compliance stakeholders to ensure solutions meet enterprise control expectations.

Stakeholder Partnership and Influence

  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with business and IT stakeholders across multiple regions.
  • Facilitate alignment on data ownership, decision rights, and architectural trade-offs.
  • Influence outcomes without formal authority by providing clear recommendations grounded in data and impact.
  • Act as a unifying technical voice across functions that depend on master data.

Delivery Leadership

  • Provide hands-on architectural leadership for complex, multi-workstream initiatives.
  • Create solution architectures for projects, ensuring designs are executable and aligned to platform strategy.
  • Partner with delivery teams to remove ambiguity, unblock execution, and drive timely outcomes.
  • Enable the business to realize value from data by delivering clean, trusted master data to analytical platforms.
  • Design and promote operational monitoring and resilience mechanisms to achieve high availability and reliability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field. 10-12 years of experience in IT/data architecture, with significant experience in MDM architecture and implementation.
  • Proven delivery of enterprise-scale MDM solutions in complex, multi-system environments.
  • Strong mastery of MDM concepts and patterns, including golden record design, match/merge, survivorship, hierarchy management, and stewardship workflows.
  • Strong expertise in data modeling and master/reference data design.
  • Hands-on experience with data integration and ETL/ELT tools and integration patterns.
  • Advanced SQL and strong relational database skills (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Snowflake or similar).
  • Strong understanding of data quality management (profiling, rules, monitoring, remediation).
  • Experience enabling or supporting data governance and stewardship operating practices.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments providing architectural guidance to delivery teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence without direct authority across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience designing solutions with security, auditability, and compliance considerations (including SOX-relevant controls).
  • Architecture level understanding of how enterprise AI platforms work. Familiarity with AWS bedrock. Ability to use Claude code or similar to design agentic flows and integrate them with MDM workflows.

Core Competencies (How Success Is Achieved)

  • Enterprise thinking: Designs solutions that scale across regions, systems, and business functions.
  • Pragmatic standardization: Balances global standards with regional realities and operational constraints.
  • Influence without authority: Aligns stakeholders through clarity, credibility, and structured decision-making.
  • Execution focus: Converts architecture into deliverable increments and measurable operational outcomes.
  • Relationship management: Ability to network with system and business stakeholders across multiple geographies and drive process and technology change.
  • Learning agility: Quickly ramps up on unfamiliar platforms, domains, and operating models.
