Job description

Position Summary
The selected applicant for this position executes assignments for the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of the voice, data, video, and software related to all MassDOT communication, electronic and Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) including, but not limited to: two-way radio, fiber optic, telephone private branch exchange, programmable controllers, tunnel ventilation, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gas monitoring, local field controllers, remote terminal units, overhead and portable variable message signs, emergency telephone, automatic gates, highway advisory radio traffic and security video, security access control, integrated project control system, real-time traffic monitoring and ancillary electronic equipment. Work with all MassDOT departments and agencies: electrical, maintenance, State Police, toll, administration, RMV, MBTA, EMS, BFD, BPD, DCR, and various other personnel, to insure continuous operation of all equipment. Responsible for providing technical support for all systems and equipment. Required to professionally interface with all departments involved in engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all MassDOT communication and electronic systems on a 24/7/365 basis to ensure continuous operation of life safety equipment.
  • Provide On-Call service based on a rotating seniority schedule and calls from the Communication Supervisor or Eng in charge.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on various life safety systems.
  • Ability to work from a ladder, platform lift truck, or bucket truck. Perform duties inside facility buildings, outside areas along roadways work zone areas as required.
  • Install voice, data, and video infrastructure for all MassDOT facilities: Highway Operations Centers, Registry of Motor Vehicles, State Transportation Building, District Headquarters, drawbridges, maintenance depots, State Police barracks, ventilation buildings, etc.
  • Install new equipment for various systems, radio, fiber optic, telephone, etc.
  • Install and maintain radios in all MassDOT and State Police vehicles and facilities.
  • Support Communications Engineers in installing and upgrading systems.
  • Perform routine and emergency system evaluation and testing.
  • Learn unique software packages associated with each piece of equipment.
  • Comply with all policies, practices, and safety procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

This position is third shift, Sunday through Friday, 11:00PM - 7:00AM. Shifts are bid every October, or due to special circumstances, and shift changes are determined by seniority.

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time or equivalent part-time, technical professional or administrative experience in the field of telecommunications including telephone, telegraph and/or teletype work, or in the regulation of the telecommunications industry, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions
I. An Associate's degree with a major in electrical engineering technology or electronic technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in electrical engineering or electronic engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
