General Statement of Job
Under occasional supervision, conducts fire safety inspections of all buildings within the City to limit the risk of life and property losses by identifying and ensuring the correction of conditions contributing to the occurrence and spread of fire. Assists in investigating the cause, origin, and circumstances of fires involving the loss of life or injury to persons, or destruction or damage to property.
Minimum Training and Experience
Education: High school diploma or GEDExperience: Two (2) years of experience in firefightingCertifications:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Obtain and maintain all required certifications for Fire Marshal duties
  • Certified as a State Fire Marshal with training in fire cause determination
Preferred:
  • Media relations experience
Note:
  • The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
  • Any certifications not possessed at hire, must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate an automobile, standard fire equipment, pumps, generators, etc., small tools, video equipment, and a variety of automated office machines which includes a computer, typewriter, etc. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift/carry weights of ten to fifty pounds.
Other Information
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists in ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal laws and ordinances pertaining to fire safety and fire prevention.
Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with the International Fire Code and City ordinances; inspects such places as assembly, business, educational, hazardous, factory, institutional, mercantile, residential and storage establishments for existing or potential fire hazards and order correction of dangerous conditions; prepares and distributes inspection reports; conducts follow-up inspections as necessary; conducts all new construction fire safety system installation inspections.
Serves on an on-call rotation as the Fire Investigator/Deputy Fire Marshal on call for after hour incidents.
Prepares building inspection reports and daily work reports.
Assists in fire prevention and fire safety education programs/seminars; answers public inquiries on fire prevention matters; makes periodic public presentations to clubs, schools, and other organizations on fire prevention and safety.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of related documents.
Operates various types of equipment, machinery and tools such as general office equipment, computer, emergency fire pumps and generators, fire alarm equipment, cameras, pumps, drafting tools, etc.
Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
Interacts and communicates with departmental supervisors and employees, City department heads and employees, etc.
Maintains GIS for Department of Public Safety.
Complies to the National Incident Management System guidelines.
Punctual, regular, and reliable attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at the City of North Myrtle Beach.

All employees of the municipality shall learn the emergency operations procedures for their respective department and position and execute these duties fully during times of emergency. This may or may not include assignment to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
