What does a Marriott GM do?

A Marriott GM, or General Manager, oversees the daily operations of a Marriott hotel. Their responsibilities include managing staff, ensuring guest satisfaction, maintaining hotel standards, and achieving financial goals. They are also involved in budgeting, marketing, and ensuring compliance with company policies. The GM acts as the main point of contact between the property and Marriott corporate offices, ensuring the hotel delivers a high-quality experience that aligns with the Marriott brand.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Marriott GM?

To thrive as a Marriott General Manager, you need strong leadership, hospitality operations knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in hospitality management or a related field. Familiarity with property management systems (like Opera), financial reporting tools, and Marriott brand standards is essential. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills help foster a positive guest experience and effective team management. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining high operational standards, guest satisfaction, and overall hotel profitability.

What are the main challenges a Marriott GM faces in balancing guest satisfaction with operational efficiency?

A Marriott General Manager must consistently deliver outstanding guest experiences while managing costs and optimizing hotel operations. This often involves making strategic decisions about staffing, resource allocation, and service enhancements, particularly during high occupancy periods or unforeseen events. GMs also need to foster a positive team culture and ensure compliance with both Marriott brand standards and local regulations, which can be challenging in a fast-paced hospitality environment. Building strong relationships with both staff and guests is essential for long-term success in this role.

DescriptionLead an Iconic Luxury Hospitality & Residential Experience

Crescent Hotels & Resorts is seeking an accomplished luxury hospitality executive to serve as Managing Director of JW Marriott Reston Station & Residences, a distinctive luxury destination in the heart of Northern Virginia.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a sophisticated, dynamic leader to oversee a premier JW Marriott hotel and branded residential experience while shaping its continued position within one of the country's most influential and competitive markets.

The Managing Director will serve as the senior executive leader of the hotel and residences, with responsibility for the overall vision, culture, financial performance, luxury positioning, and guest and resident experience.

We are looking for more than an exceptional hotel operator.

We are seeking a visible leader, strategic business partner, luxury brand ambassador, and culture builder who understands how to create extraordinary experiences while delivering exceptional business results.

The Opportunity

As Managing Director, you will have the opportunity to lead a complex luxury hospitality environment that brings together hotel operations, Food & Beverage, branded residences, sophisticated ownership and stakeholder relationships, and the expectations of today's luxury traveler and resident.

You will work closely with Crescent Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, ownership, residential stakeholders, and an experienced executive leadership team to drive the property's strategic direction and long-term success.

Your impact will extend well beyond the day-to-day operation of the hotel.

You will help define how JW Marriott Reston Station & Residences is experienced by its guests, residents, associates, business partners, and the broader Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. community.

What You'll Lead

Luxury Guest & Resident Experience
Set the standard for exceptional, personalized hospitality across both the hotel and residences, creating a culture where attention to detail, genuine service, and meaningful connections define the experience.

Strategic & Financial Performance
Take full ownership of the business, including financial performance, budgeting, forecasting, revenue growth, profitability, capital planning, and long-term asset value.

Ownership & Stakeholder Relationships
Serve as a trusted strategic partner to ownership, Crescent, Marriott International, residential stakeholders, and other key partners through transparent communication, strong business judgment, and demonstrated results.

Executive Leadership & Culture
Build, inspire, and develop a high-performing leadership team while creating an environment where associates feel valued, challenged, empowered, and connected to the success of the property.

Commercial & Market Positioning
Partner with Sales, Marketing, Revenue Management, and Food & Beverage leadership to strengthen the property's luxury positioning and competitive presence throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and beyond.

Food & Beverage
Champion distinctive restaurant, bar, banquet, and culinary experiences that enhance the property's identity, engage the local community, and contribute meaningfully to both reputation and financial performance.

Community Presence
Be the face of JW Marriott Reston Station & Residences—developing relationships with business and community leaders, luxury travel partners, key clients, residents, and other influential stakeholders.

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is an accomplished hospitality executive who combines luxury sophistication with strong business instincts and an authentic, highly visible leadership style.

You understand that luxury is not simply defined by a brand or physical product—it is reflected in the details, the culture, the people, and the consistency of every experience.

You are equally comfortable reviewing a P&L with ownership, developing strategy with your executive team, engaging with a resident or VIP guest, walking a restaurant during dinner service, or representing the hotel at an important community event.

Your Background

Significant progressive leadership experience within luxury, upper-upscale, full-service, or complex hotel environments.

Successful experience as a General Manager, Managing Director, or senior hotel executive with responsibility for overall property performance.

Luxury hospitality experience strongly preferred, particularly with JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, EDITION, or comparable luxury brands and organizations.

Experience with branded residences, mixed-use developments, or sophisticated residential and ownership environments is highly desirable.

Experience within the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia market or another major luxury metropolitan market is preferred.

Demonstrated success managing sophisticated ownership and asset-management relationships.

Exceptional financial acumen with strong command of P&L performance, budgeting, forecasting, revenue strategy, and capital planning.

Strong understanding of luxury Food & Beverage, commercial strategy, and market positioning.

Proven ability to recruit, develop, inspire, and retain exceptional leadership teams.

Polished executive presence and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.

Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related discipline preferred.

The Leader Who Will Thrive Here

You are strategic, but you enjoy being close to the operation.

You have high standards, but you know how to inspire people to reach them.

You understand sophisticated owners and stakeholders, but never lose sight of the associates and guests who ultimately bring the experience to life.

You are curious about what's next in luxury hospitality and confident enough to challenge conventional thinking.

Most importantly, you believe exceptional financial performance and exceptional hospitality should—and can—exist together.

Why Crescent Hotels & Resorts

At Crescent Hotels & Resorts, we believe our success begins with exceptional leaders.

As one of North America's leading hotel and resort management companies, Crescent provides talented hospitality professionals the opportunity to lead distinctive properties while benefiting from the resources, expertise, and support of an established organization.

For the right leader, JW Marriott Reston Station & Residences represents an opportunity to make a significant impact on a premier luxury asset and help define its next chapter.

If you are ready to bring your leadership, luxury hospitality experience, business acumen, and passion for creating exceptional experiences to one of Northern Virginia's most distinctive hospitality destinations, we invite you to explore this opportunity.

Join us and lead what's next at JW Marriott Reston Station & Residences.
