Basic Function

The Manager of Business Segments is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing and optimizing the performance of various business segments within the organization. This position involves developing and executing strategies to drive growth, profitability, and operational efficiency across different segments. The Manager of Business Segments collaborates with cross-functional teams, sets performance metrics, and ensures alignment with overall corporate objectives.

Reporting to the Director, Segment Marketing, Specialties, the Manager, Business Segments will be responsible for the consistent and disciplined execution of the Segment management process; Acts as a business manager with total ownership for their segment (Market Research, Customer Insights, Planning, Strategic pricing), leading the product portfolio and related innovation, sets and delivers strategies, drives team to achieve business goals and plan within all allocated segments. The Manager, Business Segments drives alignment amongst key stakeholders (sales, Technology, GSC, etc.) to deliver the most value for our customers, distributors, associates and the organization.

The Manager, Business Segments is responsible for developing and executing the product and segment based growth and overall margin expansion. Defines the value proposition, product differentiation and commercial development needs for success. The Manager, Business Segments drives alignment with key stakeholders to cover all relevant cross functional considerations to ensure they are addressed in the commercial development of new products and markets as well as in the management of existing products. Coordinates the execution of the strategy internally and externally with team members. Supports commercial endeavors on a day to day basis across all aspects of their product slate, ensuring their teams prioritize the highest value opportunities.

Job Duties

Strategic Planning

  • Responsible for the overall category management including portfolio management / SKU optimization, marketing budget and annual planning process
  • Develops and implements business segment strategies aligned with the organization's overall goals
  • Conducts market analysis to identify opportunities and threats within each segment
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to define long-term business segment objectives
  • Measures and monitors results of all PSO changes and marketing support plans, revising strategy and execution when needed to hit the strategic goals

Financial Management

  • Manages budgeting and forecasting for each business segment
  • Monitors/analyzes financial performance, identifying improvement areas and implementing corrective actions
  • Works to optimize revenue generation and cost control within each segment

Operational Oversight

  • Provides leadership to business segment teams, ensuring operational excellence and efficient workflow
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams (sales, marketing, operations, technology) to streamline processes and enhance overall productivity
  • Implements best practices to improve operational efficiency
  • Adheres to Red Folder, Speed to Market and PLC processes
  • Provides timely updates on key project milestones to senior leadership

Market Development

  • Identifies and pursues new business opportunities within existing and potential segments
  • Stays informed about industry trends and competitor activities to maintain a competitive edge
  • Together, with Sales responsible for development of budget, top line revenue growth, margin optimization and realization of the product line budget and growth strategy
  • Develops in-depth understanding of the marketplace including applications, customer base, competitive landscape, cost drivers, trends and alternative technology
  • Continuously and profitably improves both the product and service sides of the Product Service Offering to create brand value, targeting growth customer segments

Performance Metrics and Analysis

  • Establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) for each business segment
  • Regularly analyzes and reports on segment performance against established KPIs
  • Utilizes data-driven insights to make informed decisions and adjustments to strategies
  • Proactively collaborates with Marketing during the development phase of initiatives to expedite speed to market and promote packaging efficiencies for GSC considering cost and production interruptions / impacts

Stakeholder Communications

  • Effectively communicates business segment strategies, goals, and performance to stakeholders, including senior management
  • Fosters strong customer and distributor relationships to drive collaboration and mutual success
  • Executes key marketing activities to ensure the right positioning, messaging and tools are delivered including presentations, collateral material, promotions and trade participation
  • Collaborates with wider marketing team on branding, digital and social media, trademark management

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruits, trains, and develops a high-performing team within each business segment.
  • Provides mentorship and coaching to team members to enhance individual and collective performance.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience
  • A minimum of 10 years B2B Marketing or Product/Category Experience
  • Prior Sales experience and/or Product Management experience

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior People leadership experience
  • Ability to translate science/technology into marketing communications is an asset
  • Project Management Skills
  • Experience of CRM (SalesForce)
Education Level
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

  • A Masters of Business Administration or relevant experience

  • Product Management Experience - Managing product lifecycle from initial development to product exit.
  • Marketing aptitude - (i.e., pricing, promotions/advertising, supplier management) - understands the direct, distributors and associates sales environment; to identify significant competitive issues such as product, technology issues that may affect the product categories.
  • Market Intelligence - proven experience in scanning product & market and leveraging relationships to understand market and consumer trends. To map market analysis and product line profitability analysis.
  • Relationship Building Skills - ability to form partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. With effective communication and presentation skills.
  • People & Stakeholder Management - Experience in managing people and/or teams and influencing stakeholders (internal and external), both globally and on a regional level.
  • A unique blend of business (commercial and financial) and technical savvy to recognize new opportunities, prioritize based on financial assessment, define the commercial development strategy and deliver on the tools to achieve success
